Roslind, music is not my forte, so I avoid playing in that sandbox. I have always felt that Gilbert and Sullivan's (possibly) greatest work, The Mikado, had little to do with Japanese culture, but rather was a picture of 19th Century British imperialism, racism and ethnic bigotry, though an operetta about feudal Japan. It is a good picture of the fusion of east and west.

The china, by Royal Crown Derby, and its china pattern Mikado <img SRC="http://www.suite101.com/files/topics/107..."> are probably based on early Japanese legends, but exactly which, if any, will take some research. The Mikado era began in 710AD. The pattern is, indeed, quite similar to Blue Willow, and it IS lovely.

Thank You, Virginia.... Already I have information to research... Incidently, my mother-in-law has passed on a set of the beloved Blue Willow ...but all my children seek the collection ... so I had to find other beauties such as the Mikado , of course it will never be as endearing to the heart as BLUE WILLOW. Thanks for sharing. Please visit me at Classical-Diva.

I had no idea this was behind the Blue Willow china. I have always thought it pretty, too, and understand your passion.

Jerri, there is something about blue and white that is very soothing and touches the soul in some manner. I am waiting for Tom to go into that. LOL! Lately I have been seeing a great deal of blue and white table and kitchen linens to match it. If and when I ever do my kitchen over, it will be a lovely yellow, with blue and white. And I just happened to think, writing some of the lines from the legend on the wall, as a border, would be so charming.

Oh Virginia, I love your idea for the kitchen. I love blue, white and yellow together and the lines from the legend would be a very charming touch.

I was by earlier this month to read your article, but apparently I didn't leave a post. What a muddle I must be in. lol. I enjoyed reading this legend in poem form. I'd heard it before but this is a enchanting way to tell it. And thank you so much for linking to American Dinnerware. I've added a link back to this article in a message at my topic.

Enjoyed reading the other posts here. It seems everyone has some blue willow dinnerware in their past.

Hope all is well with you.

I knew there was a legend connected to the china pattern, but unbelievably, I had NEVER heard it before. Better late than never, so the saying goes!

I love the Blue Willow china too and did not realize it had this interesting story behind it.

I was late in life learning of the legend. Folklore never ceases to amaze me, Joy.

When I taught in Alberta in the early 1060s, I used to eat in a Chinese restaurant which used only Blue Willow china, and the legend was printed on the placemat, so I have known it for 40 years.
