Public-house SignsRead the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". » Tina_Coruth - Love the signs! Hi Lee,I love these signs. It's amazing what a sign can represent, besides the artistry. I had not thought of it before. The history and culture they represent is fascinating. I very much enjoyed reading this and following the links -- thank you! :-) Tina -- posted by Tina_Coruth » Dan_Ellsworth - Inklings at the Eagle and Child I'm usually suspicious of pubs (Is it true you can actually get [Gasp!] alcoholic beverages there?), but I have to admit, if I get to England I could hang out at the Eagle and Child (Bird and Baby, if you wish), reflecting on what it meant to one of my top-ten favorite authors, C. S. Lewis. And I guess that's the best of what pubs are about, the fellowship of kindred spirits. This article was very interesting, and got me thinking about what might result if a pub-sign artist turned into an ardent Christian and wanted to make a sign for his (Her? Why be narrow?) home church. Then there's the British Factor: Things of British background (especially English and Scottish) tend to get my interest, even if adopted by "the colonies". -- posted by Dan_Ellsworth » Dubh_Sidhe - Re: Love the signs! In response to message posted by Tina_Coruth:Thank you, Tina. You know, I had really never considered the signs before, either. I particularly remember seeing loads of them in Virginia and Kentucky. I should have included one of a planet or something especially for you. -- posted by Dubh_Sidhe » Dubh_Sidhe - Re: Inklings at the Eagle and Child In response to message posted by Dan_Ellsworth:Hi there, Dan. I am so happy you posted. Gotta tell you, I love your link, and thanks for including it. The Eagle and Child is a very sophisticated-looking pub and I can see you now crossing the street, with C.S. Lewis in hand. Hee! Hee! I can imagine a "sign" on his/her Laodicean Church, but not Philidelphian. LOL! You came up with a great what-if, Dan. An angel holding a Bud, perhaps? Yes, I know what you mean about English/Scottish. -- posted by Dubh_Sidhe » MyGrammie - Signage I was simply fascinated by this article, my favorite sign is "Merlin", a little prejudice on my part, King Arthur and Merlin, are famed legends of great interest to me. I will never just glance at a pub sign, now I've been inspired to study their detail. Thanks!-- posted by MyGrammie » Dubh_Sidhe - Re: Signage In response to message posted by MyGrammie:Oooooh, crunchings and munchings, I am so glad, and I love Arthur and Merlin, too, Deb. Sure glad you stopped by. -- posted by Dubh_Sidhe Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
