This might be an odd question, but it the violin and fiddle near each other in instrument history terms?

Sorry to take so long to respond, Michele. I've been chatting to fiddling pals about the history of these alternative names for the instrument, and haven't come up with anything decisive except that 'fiddle' is the more informal term.
In folk circles the word 'violin' is rarely used, but many classical players are happy to refer to their violins as fiddles. They sometimes use the word for other members of the violin family, too - violas, cellos and double basses.
