I'd like to hear from some of you. Do any of you have the problems mentioned in the article? What did you do to take care of them? Has anyone used the Alexander Technique?
In my own case; I haven't tried it yet, but there is a list on the technique that I think I might sign up for.
My main problems in playing are tension in my neck and shoulders. Ever since I was a junior in college and really doing these marathon sessions, I've developed enough tension in my neck to cause popping.
But, as another plug, I've been reading the Mozart Effect, which have some great ideas for relaxation music. So, lately, I've been listening to Charles Littleleaf recordings. (see last week's article!)

What I find works really well is ice. Often hand pain is tendinistis-basically an overuse of your hands to cause inflamation. If you fill the sink with ice water and just leve your hand/wrist in it for about 15 minutes, and do this especially when it is acting up, it does tend to go away after a short period of time. It may come back again though.

» ritamc - "Painful hands and wrists from fluteplaying"

Hello out there,
This site caught my eye because I also suffer from painful hands and arms after a music session. Although I don't have any great cure, I've been told the more you practice the stronger your muscles get and therefore, the less pain you will get.
I happen to play a wooden flute so, it's rather heavy. Unfortunately, in the past I played a french flute with an ivory headjoint and I wound up with a ganglion cyst in my wrist. So,if anyone has any great ideas for overcoming the pain,I'm all ears.
