» CRBerkes - Flutist or Flautist?

Can anyone please clear up a heated debate in our offices?

I heard a young woman introduce herself to someone as "a flutist". I remarked to my friend that it should be 'flautist'. Since then, our office has been taking sides, searching the internet, and researching this topic to no avail.

WHAT is the difference between 'flutist' and 'flautist', if any? Where did the names originate, and why 'flautist'?

Thank you for any help in the matter!
