» Georgene A. Bramlage - Fun and imaginative!

Teresa,

Thanks for a fun and imaginative article smile Hurricanes are scary, but your article is creative...Goth Gardens!

What a neat idea to save large and dead plants for decorating...

Another idea for you...a couple of years back I was at a local farm stand and an "artist-type" fellow was buying corn stalks with roots attached. The farmer had yanked them out of the round for the fellow. He was going to basically pull the leaves off, turn them upside down like a parasol, and cluster them in a bouquet. You'd never know they were recycled corn stalks.

Glad to have you back...safe and sound!

Georgene

Teresa,

I agree with Georgene. This is a fun and imaginative article. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The dead plants idea is terrific. I have several around here that can have cobwebs added for Halloween night. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the kind words! I love walking through a garden (any garden, anytime of the year) and trying to see if the "designer" has a theme or a statement to make. I have actually stopped by a yard that had an entire row of 2' tall hedges that had no leaves and were definitely dead and asked if I could pull them out. The shocked homeowner said sure! Dead bushes were a lot easier to come by during the drought four years ago than the last two years with over 70 inches of rain both this year and last. This year they are just rotting away. Make sure that if you do collect dead plants that you knock off all the dirt (to prevent natural decomposing) and that you don't keep them close to your house or any structure that's not termite proof.

Going to Samhain celebration next Saturday night - hopefully I will come away with some bewitching ideas for next years Halloween column.
Boo yah!

I am always impressed with how creative gardeners can be with their leftovers, recyclables, and mistakes. I praise them for their lack of "shame" and turning what an average person would throw away into a garden of delight.

Thanks - Like I said, I don't even remember September. Three hurricanes, ceiling leaks (I'm working on inventing an interior rainbarrel device), 8 days without electricity, double load of work and year-end reports, a new grandbaby a month early, visiting relative from Scotland, (who was thrilled at the idea of being in a hurricane), and a family birthday party for my 5 year old grandson, you know the type - 15 adults, three children?

Glad I can just relax and garden now... or at least write about it.

Hi Teresa,

Had to come back and see your illustrations smile Neat!

Your article has given my imagination a lot of "grist for the mill," instead of a goth garden...maybe a witch's garden...

Thanks Georgene! Halloween starts off my favorite time of year: Fall/winter in Florida. All the family holidays, cooler temperatures, and I get to grow all the flowers that I envy Northern gardeners for, at least for four months out of the year. My website has many more stories and links to Halloween landscaping including gardening for bats, "black" palette flowers, scarecrows, and cemetery gardening. There are also links to themed gardening all year round, so your children can learn and enjoy gardening, create a landscape from another part of the world, or incorporating your very own special passion into your backyard.
