I have the N. gracilis, but have been unable to find sources for the other varieties. Do you know of any online nurseries that carry them?

» jfinn - Sources for Neomarica spp.

Pam,
Louisiana Nursery, Rt. 7, Box 43, Opelousas, LA, 70570 phone (318) 948-3696 FAX (318) 942-6404, carries three species: gracilis, caerulea and longifolia. They currently do not have a web site; there is a web presence for a Louisiana Nursery in Boca Raton, but this is an entirely different outfit. I have done business with Louisiana Nursery and have been pleased with the quality of their plants and with their service. Their catalog is $4, refundable with your first purchase.

Southern Perennials and Herbs also offers two species, gracilis and longifolia. Go to their web site and you will find them listed under Neomarica in the Perennials section. See http://www.s-p-h.com/home.html

Finally, I have found that in many cases nurseries and individuals often mislabel gracilis as northiana and vice-versa. According to the Royal Hort Society's Index of Garden Plants, only northiana is fragrant. It further notes that gracilis has shorter flowering stems, not exceeding 60cm, while northiana's stems are typically 90cm. Furthermore, gracilis has a style with 3 erect teeth instead of 2, which are present in northiana.

Glasshouse Works, see www.rareplants.com, lists gracilis, but says that it is fragrant. I suspect what they are peddling may in fact be northiana. Same goes for Logees nursery (see logees.com ). They do not list it on their web site, but it is offered in their catalog.
