I missed the show since I was held up at the specialists' office. Saw about the last 10 minutes so I could not form an opinion on the show.

How many doctors do you know who are home at this time of day to watch Oprah? And how many doctors do you know who place any stock in Oprah or any such talk show?

It would be nice to see a program like 48 Hours or something like that follow a FMS client from pre-diagnosis to diagnosis, with all the stuff inbetween. NOw that would be a more accurate picture.

There are steps one can take to help the activism in our own communities. For example, I've had articles in the local paper, and received many phone calls from people who said they have FMS also. I know have a list of local people whom I keep contact with.

Thanks, Wanda.

Most doctors were either working or on the golf course, if the stereotype of doctor's golfing on Wednesdays still is true..*g..And I doubt if many will be impressed with patients coming in and telling them that they have a condition because they saw it on Oprah. But it is a small beginning for CFIDS, although in my humble opinion, CFIDS has already had more media coverage than FMS for a long time.

You are doing your part for being active by what you are doing, and I believe that everything that we can do, even if it is just to explain to strangers on the street about our condition is important.

What do you or others think about me sending this article to the Oprah Show? Or even to 20/20 or 48 hours?

I hope that there is a great deal of discussion about the show here, and rather than email me, I'd appreciate it if people would post their responses here. I'm not an expert, nor am I without my brain foggy moments, and people heard different things from this show which flew right over my head. I'd like to hear all opinions, and each person has the right to post what they heard or felt whether they agree with me or not. I'm looking forward to hearing more from others who watched the show.

Sheryl Monroe

I missed the Oprah show as well, I do believe too that we need to do alot more educating of the public on this disorder.
I find that even the people I know, and that know I have it, still don't realize what I go through inside.

We are constantly putting on a front as we make our way through each day, without crying out in pain or frustration. If we actually acted how we really feel, we would be totally disfunctional.
I think we feel the need to carry on as "normal" as we can, which is so very difficult on a daily basis.

I really appreciate these articles Jausten and always look forward to reading them.

I DIDN'T SEE THE OPRAH SHOW EITHER. WE HAVE A SHOW HERE CALLED NORTHWEST AFTERNOON THAT HAD A 30 MINUTE SEGMENT ON FIBROMYALGIA. THEY HAD ON THREE WOMEN WITH IT. IT WAS REALLY GOOD FOR ME TO SEE OTHERS WITH FIBROMYALGIA. EVEN WITH THAT THOUGH AND ARTICLES, BOOKS ETC., MY FRIENDS STILL HAVE DIFFICULTY UNDERSTANDING. I WISH THERE WOULD BE AN ENTIRE NATIONAL SHOW ON THIS. I THINK IT WOULD ENLIGHTEN A LOT OF PEOPLE.

Dear Cynthia, SEND IT SEND IT SEND IT!!! I'm glad I missed the show because I would have been very disappointed also at not having FMS even mentioned, especially after you were notified that it would be! What did they do, cut that part out?

I was out overextending myself today doing back-to-school shopping and then grocery shopping (grin!). But because I rode the electric carts, I have enough (barely) energy left to do the dishes, a few at a time! Well, back to those exciting dishes.

Cynthia - love your website. You are a great encourager. I look for your new articles eagerly...

Cynthia,

Another great article, As usual, I always enjoy your articles. It really is a shame that Fibromyalgia didn't receive some coverage on the show. By all means, write to Oprah and attach this article. I would attach the discussion messages also. Maybe she'll do another show and cover FMS this time around. It can't hurt to try, Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

PS: Working on the contest entries this weekend. I finished the vote form page, it's up and working now. There are 16 entries including yours, I'm going to add about 4 or 5 more that I like and then let the folks vote away.

I just emailed the Oprah show and sent a copy of my article to them. I mentioned that a discussion was going on here, plus in newsgroups and other message boards. I was polite..*g..

I also emailed Dateline and sent them a copy of this article. But they suggest that if someone has an idea for a show, they are to use snail mail. I guess I'll have to warm up the printer and find a real stamp.

I thank all of you for your support and input. Rich, great work with your contest. Gee, you didn't have to add my web site, but I do appreciate it. Can I vote for myself???..*wg...

Janet Olson - So glad I discovered this today! I've been in the medical field for 25 years, but had to leave it because of FMS - interesting that one can get Disability for CFS, but not for FMS ... what's that all about? Should you decide to mail info' to 20/20, send it to Suzanne Sevareid, Eric's widow ... I'm his niece.

Thanks, Janet. Now if I can find the email address for 20/20, or find the time to write an email...*g..

Actually, I'm on permanent disability for FMS. But then, I'm also living in Canada, and my doctors were the ones who wrote strong letters about my inability to work at any job.
