It's something that all of us have gone through, if not, then we know someone who has. This is something that I used to stress at the support group meetings that I used to facilitate. Negativity begats negativity. No matter if it comes from another person or from your own thoughts, the result is the same, and soon you believe it. Nothing could be worse for our minds: the negativity trap. It sucks you right in and hangs on. Often, it begats another thing: Depression. Not all depression is from negativity. Let me stress this. Depression has many, many faces, and when it hits us, it is best to seek help. Eventually, depression affects everyone around you, and they feel helpless. Others are unable to cope with it and leave the depressed persons life, either by backing away, or else by desertion. This too increases the negative frame of mind, We have to be aware of this and seek help for both the negativity and/or depression. The sooner this is done, the better for all concerned, especially for the person experiencing it, and their immediate family. I don't have the answers for those that are depressed and either deny it, or steadfastly believe that they don't need help. That's such a difficult thing to cope with, and all I can say is that maybe the family members can talk with a professional out of concern, thus enabling themselves to be able to cope with the person that has the problem. If they live near a large hospital, there probably is a mental health center in that hospital. It would seem to me that there has to be some sort of support group for the families of people that are depressed. If not, they may be able to suggest some books that would help the family to get a handle on the situation. That has to be one of the most difficult things ever to cope with. Back to the negativity. The hospital or Drs. are also good sources for help. Don't overlook them. Negativity also breeds something else: suicide. Again, seek help. No person or problem is so bad that suicide is the only answer. Again, help is out there. Seeking help is a priority here. Human help. The Immune Support site is an excellent site for those that have fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome. There are many excellent articles there, and an archive of articles as well. Do take the time to have a look see at the whole site. Again, Thank You, Tamara. Rarely is stress a factor in my life and I don't worry about depression even when I'm down. I know I'll be back up again. I don't see myself in the article... -- posted by Skull13 » tamara_peters - Re: Re: by Mark Pellegrino, M.D. In response to Re: by Mark Pellegrino, M.D. posted by Loni:I guess you're lucky then, Don. As you know, I'm not a positive person by nature, and fighting negative thoughts is something I have to work at every single day. I certainly could relate! You're very welcome, Loni. And thanks so much for your response. You're right about it sucking you right in. For those of us who struggle with these issues, it's an ongoing battle. I think it's important to be aware of these issues, even if you're not directly affected by them, don't you? -- posted by tamara_peters » Rosee - Re: by Mark Pellegrino, M.D. In response to by Mark Pellegrino, M.D. posted by tamara_peters:Having had fibro for so very long I tend to forget (who doesn't eh..LOL!) about things like the ones that were in this article. I have even printed it off so I can re-read it. Negativity is one thing that I really have to work on as it is around me re my Dad. You all know that I fight the ol' depression bug and each time it rears its ugly head I have to hope that I can not let it get ahold of me. So I found this article very helpful, thanks again T! I'm so glad that you found this article useful to you. It's bad enough to have to fight the negative thoughts in our own heads, but having to deal with the negativity of others makes it twice as bad doesn't it? I still have to fight being sucked in by the negativity of a co-worker. I swear, she's the most negative person I've ever known in my life. Somedays, I come home more mentally exhausted than physically, cause I've been fighting so hard to keep my equilibrium around her. Other days, I don't even have the energy to fight it and give in. I know what you mean. When the depression bug get ahold of you it sure does hate to let go. Thanks, Mare... Hugs, -- posted by tamara_peters
