Peter: If you do post your recipe, could you make a link from here please? Sounds like you should be thinking of adding a new category to your website: "Peters Recipes". You manage to find such easy and tasty ones.

I'm just about the only one in the family that actually likes fruitcake, and here in the U.S., fruitcake is the butt of many, many jokes in many circles. There are some that I don't care for, and when my mothers is made, we use either brandy or rum, rather than the muscatel wine that she used. I've also had some excellent bakery fruitcakes that didn't have a drop of liquor in them at all. My favorite bakery fruitcake went to fruitcake heaven about 5 years ago sad
It was pretty basic: candied cherries, pineapple and lots 'n lots of pecans. That was all, no raisins, no citron, etc., etc.

Don: Artichoke stuffing? I'd be kicking and screaming too!

Who thinks up these kind of recipes? Eww.

Hubby didn't get his deer this year. But he still had fun being with the relatives. He goes more for the camaderie anyway.

Been plagued with a headache this morning. Coffee doesn't help, and cannot use anything but Tylenol until after Wed. Going in for a routine colonoscopy on Wed., so that's why the restriction on any meds that could possibly thin the blood down. Hubby has his 2 weeks ago; all was OK.

Well, off we go. Hubby has the whole week off, and we have some errands to attend to. Weather is a bit cold, but decent, so might as well get some things done as long as there aren't any storms to contend with.

Wishing everyone a good week. Bbl.

(((( Hugs )))) Loni

» Skull13 - Won't make any fruit cake jokes...

Peter...Glad you are feeling better. Fruit cake ay? Not a fav of mine. They are very common Christmas gifts down here but I think they aren't used the way the givers intended. Many are recycled and re-gifted to others...often the following year! Some end up as paperweights or door stops...

Loni...There were so many weird dishes on my mother's side of the family. My father's side was straight traditional but then they had their own troubles...arrgghh...holidays!

In more than 40 years of deer hunting, my father never even fired his rifle! He'd go up, find a comfortable place to sit and eat a case of Hershey Bars! His brother was the same way...only on time he was in a gully and a deer that was spooked by another hunter came running towards him...in fear, as the deer was leaping over the gully, he fired his rifle (eyes closed) and shot it right through the heart. It was the largest buck taken in New York State that year! A twelve point buck well over 200 lbs. We had vennison all the next year! His son, my cousin (20 years older than me), bagged one on average about every three years which was pretty good when he was out with his father and mine...the chocolate twins!

Good for you getting scoped! Prevention is worth its weight in gold!

Jeanne came home late last night (later flight and weather delays) and had several boxes of Drake's Cakes and two buttered rolls that I just polished off. Got into the Drake's last night...I was drooling when I saw them!

She seemed to be doing okay...a gift box from my friend Sue and cards from her job and my sister seemed to make her smile without tears. She was so full of stories about her family she was just exploding with them! She genuinely enjoyed them.
Unlike me, she loves her family and had a great childhood...it really shows.

Got a wee bit of a surprise yesterday. An 18 wheeler stopped on the road out front and a guy hopped out ... loaded a box onto a 2 wheel dolly and wheeled it up to the house. It was a buddy of my cousin way up north just dropping off a "Care Package".

The box must have weighed 70 or 100 lbs ... or more. It was filled with various selections of moose meat & venison, a few pheasants, a couple ducks and a couple geese as well as some homemade canned tomatoes & jams. LORDY !!!!!

I am going to keep a few select packs of the moose & venison, the canned goods and the pheasants .... but am going to be "regifting" the rest of it to as many family, friends & neighbours as I can and who want it. The ducks & geese are too greasy for my taste ... and although I don't mind moose & venison ... if I ate all that was sent to me it would probably turn me completely off those meats for the rest of my life.

Thankfully ... my deep freeze was mostly empty ... so I am at least able to store them okay until I can get rid of all I don't want.

Sure was generous of my cousin ... but really wish he had called and asked if I even wanted any of it. I probably would have said "thanks but no thanks". But now that I have it ... guess I will just be thankful ... and share it around :-)

Y'all take care
Peter

All this talk about meat is making me naseous...LOL Too much talk about birds.

I don't eat a lot of meat and when I hear or see live animals it then turns me off to eat anything.

There is this commercial with Live Turkeys walking around because of the holidays - I think it is a bank commmercial or something and seeing the live Turkey on TV right now, makes me not want to have Turkey tomorrow...LOL

Peter - That is great about your "Care Package." That was very thoughtful, especially this time of the year.

I am not fond of Fruit Cake, either Don. That is too funny about the door stopper!:-)

I have family out right now and have to do some shopping. My son's birthday landed on Thanksgiving this year! I have to get a birthday cake, nothing like waiting until last minute and I still haven't gotten his birthday gift yet either. Bad Mommy.

It is a bit nippy here. It certainly feels like Thanksgiving now with the weather we are having.

Don - I am glad to hear that Jeanne made it home safe! Where did she go? I know she saw her Dad, but I mean what state?? I forgot what you said.

Well Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am thankful for this wonderful group of friends.

Peter...WoW!! That is some care package for sure! Love vennison, never had moose though. Love goose when done right though never much of a duck fan...even though I grew up in duck country. Pheasant is amazing though.

Tery...I'm a meat eater all the way so it all made me drool!

Jeanne went to New York/New Jersey. She's from Yonkers originally before moving out to Mastic Beach. Her father passed last Thursday which will make tomorrow a double whammy.

» Rosee - So Quiet...

Been having a bit of a struggle again with the old emotion roller coaster. But as I have said before I seem to beable to pull myself away from the edge of the hole before it gets a hold of me. So to avoid getting being pulled in this time I am going away tomorrow to visit my youngest son Chris, dil Monica, grandkids Sam 5, Sarah 3. I enjoy the drive down which takes about five hours where I stop often to take pictures if the weather is permitting. Hopefully I will beable to finish my Xmas shopping while down there too.

Peter that was quite the care package you had delivered to your door!! Wish I was a closer I love wild meat and game as long as it has been handled properly.

Glad that auntie has quieted down her little games with you..LOL!

Guess all of you are celebrating Thanksgivings "down there"...I could smell all those turkeys cooking from here. smile I just love turkey and wonder why I wait for holidays to have it.

Better go and make sure the house is in shape because there is going to be a showing in the afternoon. My bags are nearly packed except for the suitcase load of pills I have to take for those "just in case" times. And then there are the essential ones, my cozy blanket, cozy pillow, cozy housecoat and nightgown, books, camera, tripod...hummmmm..maybe I should just stay at home....LOL!

Hope everyone is coping, hugs to all, M smile

Hiya, Mare.. It is quiet for sure. A trip away to visit those grandkids, son, and dil sounds like just the ticket.. Hope you have a great time and are able to keep that depression at bay. smile

Tery, I don't eat nearly as much meat as I used to.

We were going to have turkey and all the fixin's today, but decided, since it's just the two of us, to have lobstah instead. I'm making a stew, bought snowflake rolls and a cheesecake and that's it. No muss, no fuss, no bother. LOL

Happy birthday to you son.

A bit nippy here as well; it's down in the 30's and we got our first snow yesterday. Looks like we're due for even more today. sad

Peter, that sure was some surprise package. A great idea to share the bounty with your family and friends, though. smile

If you do post that recipe please let us know, okay? I've never had a homemade fruit cake. I'm sure they're much better than the store-bought ones.

Glad to hear you're feeling better. I seem to be coming 'round again as well.

Don, glad to hear that Jeanne made it home safe and sound, and is doing okay.

Your hunting story reminds me of my son-in-law. He's been coming down for a couple of days every week to go hunting. It's kind of a running joke that he wouldn't know what to do if he even saw one. He packs a big lunch and sits in a blind from dawn to last-light. Honestly, I think he just likes to be out in the great outdoors.

Anyway, the other day he actually did see one. The only trouble is he was looking down the trail, and the deer, was up the trail watching him. By the time he realized he was being watched it was too late. I told him it's a good thing that deer didn't have a gun or he'd have been a gonner. LOL

Loni, I know what you mean about fruitcakes. I've never had one I liked either.

Don's idea of using them for a doorstop is a good one, though. LOL

One of my co-workers brought in a dip recently that was to die for.

Turns out that she bought this relish at Harry and Davids, which you then mix with softened cream cheese. I ordered one for ourselves and a couple as Christmas gifts online.

Hope you got rid of that headache.

I suspect most of the guys go group hunting for the camaderie as well.

My little 10 pound turkey did look pretty plump. I'm saving it for Christmas now, though, and will cook it then along with a ham.

Mare, thanks so much for the offer of a place to move Fibro Friends. I believe there's something else in the works, but it's very hush-hush for the moment. ;-)

Has anyone else noticed that Fibromyalgia Friends is now called Fibromyalgia III? sad

Personally, I would be happy never to be associated with Suite101 again. Every time I come here now it's just makes me sad and angry all over again. :O

I can't tell you the number of people they tromped on all in the name of progress.

I hope you all will consider a move sometime after the holidays. If not, then I sure will understand.

Yikes! I didn't have as much catching up as I thought I would. You all have been veeeery quiet lately.

Have a great day everyone. To our MIAs: We miss you!

And like Tery said, I'm very thankful for all of you as well. smile

Huuuuuuuuugs,
T

Breast Cancer - JenPossible Unlimited http://www.jenpossible.us/
"The story of Jennifer Hayse, a courageous young mother and her battle with cancer. Jennifer Hayse, a Visteon engineer, was 31 and a mother of two. When she found a lump in each breast in July of 2003, she dutifully went to her doctor, and had a mammogram done. But, because she was so young, and the statistics were in her favor, the doctors did not biopsy the lumps, assuming they were just cysts. So Jennifer and her husband Keith, assured that she was fine, went ahead with their family plans. In January of 2004, Jennifer was delighted to find she was pregnant with her much-longed-for 3rd child. A few months later, she noticed increasing pain in her breasts. A follow-up mammogram confirmed that she was a stage IIIC cancer victim. The doctor’s advice: terminate the pregnancy, to save her own life. Jennifer would not give up her child. She researched her options, and found that some chemotherapy treatments were safe for pregnant women and their babies. She started treatment in March of 2004, a week after her diagnosis, at the Karmanos Institute in Detroit. In September, she gave birth to a healthy, beautiful little girl, Angelina. Two weeks later, she underwent a double mastectomy, with additional removal of many lymph nodes. But there was a tumor under her left arm which could not be removed fully – it had grown around nerves and into the wall of a blood vessel. Subsequent chemo and radiation therapy were not effective. In March of 2005, she began going to Cancer Treatment Centers of America, for monthly chemo treatments. By August of 2005, she found out that the cancer was continuing to spread. She was referred to NCI in Bethesda, Maryland, but soon found that her cancer had progressed beyond their capabilities, and they would not accept her as a patient. In October, she was referred to the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, for treatment which was not available in the States. She left for Israel on November 11th. She will hopefully start treatment Thanksgiving week."

ClickOnDetroit.com - Local 4 Good Health - Cancer Patient Will Travel Across The World For Help November 21, 2005 http://www.clickondetroit.com/health/537...
Fundraiser Set Up For Local Mother Of Three "She is a mother of three on a mission. In the fight for her life, Jennifer Hayse is determined to beat the breast cancer that has dominated her life for two years. "I really just haven't believed that I'm not going to beat it," said Hayse. Local 4's Robin Simmons first met Hayse when she was pregnant with her third child and undergoing chemotherapy at the same time. Hayse found the lumps herself. At 31 years old, a surgeon told her not to worry that they were most likely cysts. "I think I was brushed off because I was only 31 and how could a 31-year-old have cancer in both breasts," said Hayse. Doctors had told Hayse she should terminate her pregnancy, but the mother was eager to save herself and the baby girl she was carrying. On Sept. 8, 2004, Angelina was born. She had two siblings, Nicholas and Natalie. Weeks after Angelina was born, Hayse underwent a double mastectomy. Doctors could not remove all of the cancer. The tumor that was under her left arm was attached to the wall of a vein and wrapped around nerves, Local 4 reported. In the one year since Hayse met with Local 4, she had undergone more chemotherapy and more radiation. She received the sad report that the treatment was failing and the disease was spreading. "They know that the cancer is bigger instead of smaller, and they know that that's bad," said Hayse. "They know that I could die, and that's the worst of it." Hayse hopes to find treatment somewhere beyond the United States. She is on her way to Jerusalem, where she's discovered that they offer cancer treatments that the United States does not."

» Skull13 - Happy Thanksgiving (American)...a month later than others!

Divine Miss M...Hope the trip and the holiday are a blast for you and perk your spirits up.

Diva...I once went to a restaurant on Long Island for Thanksgiving Dinner and they had Lobstah prominently displayed as a part of the Thanksgiving Day menu. This particular restaurant has a colonial theme and they pointed out that Lobstah was in fact a part of the first Thanksgiving.

For Tery, this was The Three Village Inn in Stony Brook. Don't know if you are familiar with it. It is a fabulous restaurant (a bit upscale) and quaint in in the old part of Stony Brook.

I hope one and all get to enjoy this holiday in a manner that makes them happy! I am thankful to count you all as friends.

Hi all

Don thanks for being here on a Holiday. It is cold here and I am sick with a bad cold and furious at friends I cooked for who decided at the last minute not to come(not sick or other reason). So I have all this food I usually don't eat and don't know what to do with it.

Hope everyone else is having a better time.

Don, Hope you and Jeanne have the good Thanksgiving you deserve.
Tamra, thanks for the email. Joyce
