I liked Lord of the Rings because it allowed me to get lost in the world created by Tolkien. I could really imagine myself as a character in the story and feeling really attached to the other characters in the trilogy. I have read the Lord of the Rings several times and each time the books are a host of new adventures. Seems to me that much of the power of great fantasy books is in their ability to transport the reader elsewhere even if it is only temprorary. How many others read these books just to get away for a little while? What other books do that for you as a reader? Just wondering what others are reading and why.

Hi Cat,

I agree with you about Lord of the Rings. I’ve read it only once, but when I did, I was immersed in it for hours each day. Didn’t notice the time go by so fast. The depths of the book prove it can be returned to again and again.

I read a wide range of Fantasy books from stuff that could be considered fluff to deep things that require a lot of reflection. It depends on my mood. Authors I find of interest and entertaining are those like Robert Jordan, Melanie Rawn, Robert Holdstock, Charles de Lint, Mercedes Lackey, Guy Gavriel Kay and the list goes on. The important thing to me is the story. Does it speak to me. That’s all I ask of a book.
