» Dan_Ellsworth - Yes, and yes. I think it fit its place in the Foundation
Yes, and yes. I think it fit its place in the Foundation framework, with with a "flavor" that was not Asimov. On reflection well after reading it, I think if the other two books also have their own non-Asimov feel, yet also fit the framework, it will become easier to accept that we are looking at the same universe, just through different "reporters". So my emotional reaction is tentative acceptance. On its own it was an interesting story. And I believe Benford handled some issues of Faith-and-Rationalism in ways Isaac Asimov could not have done. And ultimately, in a universe as major as that, it had to happen. Overall, I think this one worked.I have also finally got and read Red Mars, the first of another trilogy, after reading the second, then third. Very good. More someday. Thanks for reminding me about the Benford work.

» Dan_Ellsworth - The second was good
Someday I'll look up the title. The second book in the pre-Foundation trilogy was also very good. I haven't seen the third.-- posted by Dan_Ellsworth

» Dan_Ellsworth - About to order it from SFBC
It's a featured selection, reply due Aug. 4, of the Science Fiction Book Club. I'll be ordering it approximately Thursday. If it comes by August 25, maybe I'll read it on vacation. I'm quite confident by now; the first 2 of the 3 B's knew the Foundation and weren't afraid to think big - yet coherently with Asimov's - uh, Foundation.-- posted by Dan_Ellsworth
» Dan_Ellsworth - Got the book.
Today the 3rd book of the "pre-" Foundation trilogy arrived. I'll probably squeeze it in at bedtimes, or take it on vacation August 25 - September 7. Comments likely within seven weeks. Has anybody else been reading these?-- posted by Dan_Ellsworth

» Dan_Ellsworth - Well, partly ...
Karen, since this vacation will be Judy and me, I won't tell you everything ;-) , but maybe I'll have a line or two about the vacation and a paragraph about the book. The Foundation galaxy was one I could get quite wrapped up in, and I'm glad the "B's" (Benford, Bear, Brin) appear to be worthy to work in that galaxy.-- posted by Dan_Ellsworth
