» Diane Laney Fitzpatrick - Trouble with Travel Agents

I wonder if you could shed some light on this: I am planning a trip to Europe for me, my husband and our three teen-age kids. We don't do many "big" vacations, so decided to get some help from a travel agent to plan our trip. I called Agent #1, told him my info, he said he'd pull together some things and get back to me. Never called back. Called Agent #2, same story, except I kept calling her back (each time she had me repeat our plans, like she had never heard from me before!), Called Agent #3, told her my info, she said she'd pull together some things and get back to me. Never called back . . . you get the picture.
I would piece this together myself, except that we're planning to visit Ireland and England, we have a flight from one country to the next, we have three kids which is dicey with a triple room, and our one son is 19, which makes him technically an adult - when I try to book things I don't know how to get family discounts with these kids. Short of trading in my three kids for two younger ones, I'm at a loss.
I don't understand the travel agent business or how they make their money, but I would think that a $12-$15,000 trip would be a nice commission for someone. Do you have any idea why I'm having such a hard time getting someone to take on this job?
