Although "Fun Survey" fell flat for me, the other two sites pointed out that there's no substitute for time and attention. I have been surprised at how much mention I have got from my sons, years later, about our "Times Together" - a program I repeatedly started and only fitfully maintained, of taking some time with one of my sons each weak, as recommended by Charlie Shedd. I had thought that I retreated, defeated from that attempt, having done almost nothing. Later I found out it was important to at least two of them - maybe all three. I think we did a little better for all-family activities. Sometimes you have to schedule your family in or you'll schedule them out.

Thank you for the encouragement. I'd like to make this observation to help struggling young parents keep up hope: Now that my sons are 26, almost 24, and almost 22, I am pleased and grateful to count them among my best friends. There were times when none of us could imagine that, but here we are. We even all camped together on Memorial Day weekend, along with David's wife, and Matthew's girlfriend. (John Mark's girlfriend was sick, or would have come.) We actually all wanted to go camping together!

I just noticed the "each weak" in my first message - incorrect but suggestive of my state of mind in those years.

hehe..Dan, I noticed the "weak" also, but who am I to tell you what you meant.!! hahaha!!! I know what you mean about the kids actually "wanting" to spend some of the valuable time with good ol' dad! I lost my father suddenly just three years ago, but I'm just so grateful for the memories he helped me create. I'm sure your boys are grateful.
Isn't it so neat to have your kids as your friends after all the trials and hard years?!! It sure makes it all worth it! My kids are still very young and it's a challenge, but I know the time spent is worth it and means a great deal to them.

I had a good example growing up! I'm sure your kids feel the same way!

If you are interested you can view a tribute I wrote to my dad. I actually wrote it a year before he died and he cried when he read it. After his sudden death it has become our family tribute, but it says it all! I know your boys love you as their friend, but best of all because you were a good dad!

Excellent! Makes me want to go out and sit in a 1947 Dodge truck to remember good times helping Dad farm.
