» RoslynT - Genealogy for the younger generation - Fun?

I really support you in your comments about genealogy as a worthwhile pursuit for the kids as well as the parents.

Friends of mine say I am spoiling it for my kids by being so keen on genealogy. They say I'm not leaving any of the mystery to them by providing them with so much data myself, but I disagree.

As you say it's great for the children to have a sense of where they came from and photos can help a lot, but so can casual comments - "You've bot a ... nose" etc.

My eldest son teases me a lot my family history because I have one of my pages as the load-up page on the computer. Every time I meet someone new he says "Did you tell them about The Hobden Heritage, Mum?"

My youngest daughter has more appreciation, though. She will come for drives to places of significance and even keep me company on visits fourth cousins and cemeteries.

I can tell you it was REALLY fun for the kids when they found out they were fifth cousins to Drew Barrymore (of course, their class-mates wouldn't believe them!).

Thanks for your comments. I really agree with you about it being fun involving the children. I will strongly disagree with anyone who tells me it's taking the mystery out of for them. I don't feel family history or genealogy should have any mystery in it. Heavens! It's all about families and where we are and where we are going!

thanks again for your comments

Thanks, Cindy.

I heard it said recently that by helping the children to learn about who they are through family we can strengthen their sense of direction in life as well as their sense of identity and general confidence.

Good luck in your forum,
