a talented writer, this man sure had a bleak existence devoid of happiness, Mary. You did a fine job presenting a picture of what life was like for HCA. How sad.

I do not know if you can say unhappy or evoid of happiness, becasue he enjoyed life, but was apparently afraid to accept himself or intimate relations with others. There's a lot of people like this and we tend to write them off as happy-go-lucky singles or carefree souls-- but I think that the superficial judgment ignores the person hiding under the clothes. We tend to look at single people as those without burdens, but fail tor ealize that being alone is a great burden in itself. HCA is vey much sentimentalized in children's storybooks and animated films with the tendency to gloss over the inner conflicts that exist within the works. The Little Match Girl is made to look like Paris Hilton with a smudged face-- and the Mermaid shaped into gold charms. Yet in these stories there are real conflicts and real anxieties regarding acceptance and survival.
