Kidnapped SantaRead the article this discussion is about

» jerrib - This sends a good message, Mary. If we all gave a little of our time the holiday would be much better.I think Christmas is in your heart, if you are Christian, and your spirit soars above all the "hype" put out by the media and retail establishments. I love Santa. I think he's a jolly figure and part of the fun of surprise the holiday brings. -- posted by jerrib » pogomcl - Re: santy claws Santy Claws is indeed a jolly figure, but the sad thing is the endless "gimmee" mentality of commercial America when all year round there is such desperate poverty in the world-- and suddenly in December, somebody remembers to drop something in the pot for the misfortunate. Shouldn't be that way--the misfortunate/poor/ ignored/homeless downandouts should always be given aid and support, encouragement year round adn not made to feel like parasites standing in line for a bite to eat on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day or dropped a dollar in the pot as an afterthought... the poverty in the US is appalling. Thousands of homeless families and people without basic medical care. It's nice to get presents, but ten thousand times better to have a place to live with regular food and medical care... with a reason to live.when you have a place to live, something to give and something to receive in return, then Christmas can be a nice warm time of the year; but when you have nothing, and receive nothing and have no hope of job or future and no way to support yourself or care for yourself, then Christmas is a day to avoid. it only reminds you that you anren't anything of vaule or wanted and have nothing to offer to the world. But I hate it when people call him Satan Claws and claim he is evil. -- posted by EvilChihuahua » EvilChihuahua - Re: Re: Re: This In response to Re: Re: This posted by pogomcl:No, you didn't say he was evil, but I agree that neglecting the poor is. Many people have said there is no point in helping them because if we give them money they'll spend it on drugs and alcohol, but this is just a cruel stereotype. The poor do need our help because, what some people forget is, they are still people like us. -- posted by EvilChihuahua » jerrib - I agree, Mary, we don't do enough for the poor all year long. It is a terrible social stigma to be poor in our country and some people do have bad attitudes about giving help.I wish we would pull out of the war in Iraq and help folks more at home. I guess Christmas is a time to forget all the woes of the world and enjoy the happiness we all need to have. Good discussion. -- posted by jerrib » pogomcl - Re: I agree, Mary, In response to I agree, Mary, posted by jerrib:it is a stereotype-- people use drugs and alcohol because they find they have no value within a society that puts so much emphasis onto status. Moreover the people of my town were shocked to find out that the average homeless person now is educated, comes from middle income class, but has lost everything through a sudden disaster such as a health crisis, sudden job loss, car accident, etc something like 22 percent of all american kids are now coming from homeles families and there is no safety net... once you land on the street, it is virtually imnpossible to recover because you are pushed aside. Think about hunting for a job without an address or clothes. got the pic--is really hrrible...and that's why i protest the gross self-indulgence and commercialism that comes with Christmas... the giving needs to come from the soul and not just the pocket to the best friend. Regardless of how small the gift is to someone facing a hard time, that gift will make a difference just by providing courage and hope... even if only visiting the same baglady on her corner every day or twice a week to see if she wants a cup of tea, gives support and helps her live to the next day. -- posted by pogomcl » pogomcl - link to Seattle study In response to Re: I agree, Mary, posted by pogomcl:here is a new article from Seattle Times regarding the premature deaths and helth problems of homeless people Homeless People Died at the Avg Age of 47 I have several white papers from NGO's regarding the horrific statistics of poverty in the US and the future prognostics-- without food, shelter and adequate healthcare, it doesn't really matter how intelligent or brilliant you might be--nobody hires homeless people and they are treated worse than most people's pets. and so many, many people are incredibly self-indulgent and selfish when it comes to giving assistance or encouragement-- and Christmas unfortunately is heavily used for capitalism, greeed and gimmee-ism -- posted by pogomcl » pogomcl - Re: link to Shaq-a-Claus Shaq-a-Claushttp://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercuryne...
