In response to message posted by JButler:
Renie, I have done more research and still find no reports of a dog death on Buser's team, however there is a report of one on Jim Oehlschlaeger's team as they checked into Ruby. As I wait for the necropsy report to be revealed I looked into the race log archives and found that he had just come off an 18 hour rest so I speculate that it was not from exhaustion. We'll see what the necropsy report says.

Nor did I realize why is was run. I heard of TV the other night about the outbreak of diptheria and how some of the dogs took the serum through to the village which was in need of it, hence saving many lives. I was glad to also find out in the article that the dogs do not "suffer" from this grueling race.

» Joy Butler - Race Casualty

To those concerned, one sled dog was killed in a freak accident this year. According to race marshall, Mark Nordman, a veterinary pathologist report states that Goro, a 5 year old husky suffered a fatal spinal injury when he became entangled in harness as the team attempted to get back on path after taking a wrong turn. Tragic as it is, this accident could have happened anywhere, unrelated to this race. Our sympathy goes out to Jim Oehlschlaeger, and we wish him the best, as he finishes the Iditarod with his remaining dogs.

» Red - iditarod...

Joy,

You've done a fantastic job with this article. These dogs are certainly extraordinary. I would love to go and be at the finish line one year to see the dogs come in. I follow the race most years but things were just too hectic here this year. I'm glad I could read all the news here.

My heart goes out to Jim. I'm sure he will miss his beloved dog very much. These dogs and their masters have very firm bonds, but accidents do happen.

Thanks for such great coverage. I hope all is well in your corner of the world. The flu is visiting here and I hope it doesn't stay long. Brandon and Dwight are both down with it.

In response to message posted by Red:Hi, Mary, I would certainly love to be standing right there at the finish line with you one year but I doubt that will happen. Live webcams are the next best thing.

Tell Brandon and Dwight to stop entertaining that flu bug soon and I hope no one else in the family catches it. Please don't send it this direction. smile

» roslinds - BRRRR

Hey Joy...

Nice to learn something new.... We had friends who, owned Sled Dogs in Canada... Malamuts, they were absolutely stunningly clever animals. Very much in a pecking order.

Our friend, treated them like gold but certainly made sure, the dogs knew, he was the boss. This was a enlightening article.

Thanks again... Vist me, anytime, at.... Classical Diva.

Most of the northern breeds are quite clever and independent. Did you ever get the opportunity to go for a sled ride?
