Hi Joy, what a wonderful article! So true about the pigeons of war. I remember them being used in Hungary. In fact, when my grandfather was hiding, he sent us a message with a homing pigeon, telling us he was okay. I had forgotten it, but your article certainly reminded me. I loved your touching tribute to pigeons. Thank you. Catch you again soon you know where! Renie-- posted by Renie_Burghardt
» SWALKER0 - What a wonderful story...
I learned so much from your article. I had no idea pigeons were still used to carry medicines, and I didn't know they mated for life. You're right, humans could learn a lot from pigeons about being faithful, whether it's to one's duty or to one's mate.-- posted by SWALKER0

Joy, what a touching article. These birds are definitely heroes and I salute them. When we speak of veterans, we think of men, women and canines. Thanks so much for reminding us that these wonderful birds were veterans too.We had a pair of pidgeons that lived nearby. The male never returned one day and the female grieved for days. She made the most pitiful cries ever heard. Now I know why. I wasn't aware that pidgeons mated for life. Sad to say, the female disappeared shortly after the male.
Thanks for sharing this great article with us. It was very informative and well written. I await your next article with eager anticipation.

» jerrib - When I
first started reading I was wondering what war had to do with your topic. Now I know. What a wonderful story about GI Joe.These birds have always intrigued me; I remember wanting one as a kid. Now I'm even more intrigued. It's always amazing to me they have the intelligence and ability to do the feats human ask of them.
Great tale.

Hi Joy,As usual, you did a superb job of explaining the invaluable jobs pigeons -- so often thought of as pests -- did in wartime. Five plus stars!
