It's been many long years since I read the Black Stallion, too. As a girl, I dreamed of having a horse. This is a wonderful review, Joy. I didn't know that the Arabians' had different anatomy as far as having fewer ribs, lumbar bones and vertebrae compared to other horses. I was also very interested to read that they are considered to be the oldest pure breed. Very interesting and informative review!

It's been many years for me too but I read every book in the series. I too thought it was interesting that they used so many horses in the latest movie. I don't know why they felt they needed so many stand bys.

Looks like everyone posting here has read the Black Stallion books, Tina. I suppose that speaks for how good they were. I'm glad you found the article interesting.

Yes, Joy. I think your article brought back a lot of happy memories for us. I know a lot more people read the articles than post. I'm sure your article will inspire those who haven't read the Black Stallion books to do so. More happy memories in the making!

Almost! I have never read those books. But, I think (if I remember) I have seen a movie or two!

I was one of those little girls who experienced the unforgettable magic of the magnificent Arabian stallion.

Thanks to this excellent article, I will read the books! Thanks Joy, for inspiring an ole soul to go back and be a kid againsmile Truly, an inspiring article!...

I believe several generations have grown up on Walter Farley's books. I remember these as good wholesome books that parents could be proud to get for their children.

It's been so long since I read them...I don't know if the magic would be the same for me, reading them as an adult (as we discussed in your Writers' Suite topic). But with your go back and be a kid again outlook on life, Wendell, you'll never be an ole soul.

Changing the subject somewhat, but seems like a good place to ask.
Do you remember the scene in Man From Snowy River where the horse ran straight down a mountainside?
I have often wondered how much the event was faked to get the effect. Anyone know?

I haven't seen this movie so I'm not familiar with the scene but, for many years, most movies using animals are monitored for animal safety by the American Humane Association. Since this movie was made in 1982, I would guess that much of the event you speak of was faked, perhaps trick photography.
