» Laraliz - Your "take" on Attachment Parenting...

I can understand where you may have been coming from when you were writing your essay here, but I have to say I do object to your reference to infants as "leeches".

I guess I just believe that our children are innocents who need to be loved, protected and comforted regardless of the inconveniences and disruptions it might cause in our daily lives.

By no means do I intend to insult you. I am glad that we all have the freedom to choose how we care for our children and conduct our family rituals in our own homes. I wish you and your family love and health.

Your ideas about using the baby sling while doing household chores like mowing the lawn are fantastic! I hope more Dads like you will feel comfortable doing so!

Dear Laura,

Thanks for your comments regarding my essay on attachment parenting. I'm glad to know someone's reading. I think you're absolutely right: the beauty of life in a free society is that we are all at liberty to pursue life and happiness in our own ways.

My reference to "leeches" was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. I certainly don't mean to offend anyone. I just like to try to bring a little humor to the often far-from-funny task of being a good parent. Sounds like you are definitely a wonderful mother.

All the best, Dale

Hi Laura!

When I was pregnant with my son Nicholas, I was concerned about nutrition, due to severe morning sickness. My Perinatologist referred to my son as a "parasite" as they take from your body first and we mothers are the ones to suffersmile

I am sure Dale's comment was made in the lightest form, just as my Peri's comment wassmile

We do love our children very muchsmile But yes in utero they are parasites and leechessmile

» Goldenberry - Dale's "Attachment Parenting" misunderstanding

This article is one of the most offensive in the realm of parenting I have read in a long time! The author seems to think that Attachment Parenting is "something new" "a trend" and for "fanatics." It is actually the way MOST people in the world parent.

It is a great deal more than wearing a baby in a backpack. And I can't even address those who place an arbitrary age or developmental time to call breastfeeding "icky."

I suggest Dale read The Baby Book by Sears and Sears, or Attachment Parenting by Katie Allison Granju or any of the great literature about how to parent without ego getting involved.

People who have a problem with Attachment Parenting usually have two things in common 1) They completely misuderstand what it is and 2)They feel confined and threatened by the power and responsibility it entails. I think both apply to this article
