You mentioned something very important that people don't often think about and that's looking like a tourist. Before a trip to Africa they told me, don't look like a tourist or carry cash, traveler's checques or credit cards. So, go broke and... I'm a fair-skinned red-head who doesn't even look her Cherokee heritage let alone African!
At that time of political conflict, I ended up not going. But, good article here.
