I have not read this book. What can you tell me that would make me want to read the book?

What, other than because its about geology and a cool topic at that?!

Actually, modern geologic maps are used everyday to do everything from search for fossils and oil, to determining the best sites for roads and new construction. Geology and the mapping of the geology around us impact our lives in profound ways, and without the pioneering work by William Smith much of how we look and study geology could be quite different. Other than offering a good history of the geologic map, the book is an excellent biography of William Smith. If you have any interest in either history, biographies, or the earth sciences then I would highly recommend this book.
