» rik - Esperanto & Poular Music

You mention the cabarets which Schwartz ran in Paris. I once visited the last of these and met my favourite author Pity nobody recorded any of the items.
You also mention Gilbert and Sullivan. There is a complete recording of the Esperanto version of Pirates of Penzance.
I agree that much Esperanto poular recording is pretty dire but there are some worth hearing.
My tastes are old fashioned (opera, jazz, swing etc.) and I don't like modern pop or rock but I have a few Esperanto records.
Nikolin' has one video apart from her tapes
In the sixties Jahger, Charters and Balbin produced "Ni Kantu en Esperanto" and Duo Espera brought out an LP of translations of Dylan and Seegar. About then Margaret Hill appeared with "Kantanta Mia Birdo" translations of British folk songs.
I quite like the recordings of Alberta Casey although as she sings popular standards she inevitably suffers by comparison with the really great singers who made them famous. They are of interest to the linguist who is familiar with the originals for the ingenuity of the translations. It is particularly interesting (at least to me as a Sondheim fan) to compare the translation of "Send in the Clowns" on her recording with that of the recording by John Francis.
The record "Patsy svingas Esperante" by a jazz singer Patsy Cordell is pleasing . I don't know whether she has done anything else in Esperanto.
I have been told that the singer Joelle Rabu should please me but I have never been able to find anything by her

» David_Poulson - Welcome contribution!

Hi Rik, sorry to be so long in responding to this message.

As always, I'm very pleased to see my short article being considerably enhanced by additional information appearing in the discussion forum.

I have a copy of the Pirates of Penzance recording...a heroic effort, really. I also have a copy of Alberta Casey's LP and, after your remarks, I'm going to go back to it and listen to the words rather than the music!

Last week I received out of the blue a CD from Max Wearing, a South Australian Esperantist. It's called "Herooj kaj Martiroj" and is Max's own compilation and performance of Australian songs and poems about various characters who have made a place for themselves in Australian history - or mythology!

More about this later.

In response to message posted by rik:

Saluton, Joelle Rabu here in British Columbia, Canada. I recorded an album in 1986 entitled PASSPORT, which featured 3 songs in Esperanto (2 Edith Piaf tunes and one of my own LA Valso Patrina), plus a song in 10 languages entitled: Esperanto, which I wrote to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the language in Poland the following year. My trio and I attended the 1987 congress and did a concert in Warsaw. Most of my songs have been translated into Esperanto as I have love performing in different languages(I speak French, English, German and Sign language)however I find the translation of some of them to be awkward in poetry. They were translated by non-musical people. My 1986 recording is no longer available except on dinasaur(!)vinyl. I hope one day to record a CD in Esperanto providing I can find good translations of my style of songs (torch, chanson-dramatique)and of course the funding to do such a project! My PASSPORT vinyl and cassette recording is available for sale in Rotterdam at the UEA office and also via my own mail order email service.
Interesting viewing your site, nice job!
Cheers, joelle (www.joellerabu.com)

Saluton!

pardonu, mia angla kono estas tre malbona, sed mi tamen klopodos skribi angle kiu shajne estas la chefa lingvo de tiu chi forumo...

As some new entries in the Esperanto-Music I suggest you to visit these pages about two new songs from Mauritius Island (Indian Ocean) in Esperanto the inter-ethnic (international) language.

Latest hits of the

- young singer of sega Mary-Jane GASPARD - "Nur Amiko":
http://www.studio-pro.ch/famille-gaspard...

and

- a reggae/soul of the islandwide famous group
Negro Pou La Vi - "La Persisto":
http://www.studio-pro.ch/La_Persisto.html

If you have difficulties to see the videos, go here and download them for easy watching later:
http://www.studio-pro.ch/La_Persisto-reg...

For your convenience, all the texts of the songs are there in Esperanto, so you can easily learn the songs and sing with them while watching the clips!

You'll find there soon also the original version of the songs in Mauritian Creole language - as we (esperanto speakers) respect all the native cultures.

Both of the group & singer participates in the worlwide music competition, "La Verda Stelo" in the programme "Muzikume, announced by the Internacia Televido
http://internacia.tv
You also can give your vote for the best!
