» Labestul - Esperanto and the Movies

Thank you David for a most interesting article. I learned several interesting things from it.

Do you know if any (in particular Zamenhof's funeral) of the events you described are currently available in some form?

I also wanted to mention three points. I hope that I am not jumping the gun so to speak because you may be planning to write about these things in later articles but ...

(1) The main literary works of Jean Forge consist
of two collections of short stories (almost all with an Esperanto related theme) and the other three are novels. The writing style is simple and most entertaining. Of course these are all written originally in Esperanto. One of the best ways to improve one's Esperanto (in my opinion) is to read voratiously. The works of Jean Forge are a real delight.

(2) One of the earliest films in Esperanto was "ANGOROJ" and it is currently available on video tape from UEA. I recommend it highly.

(3) There was an art film called "INCUBUS" which all but disappeared. It has been digitally remastered and is available online. Anyone interested can consult http://incubusthefilm.com for more information. The film is entirely in Esperanto with English subtitles. I had heard it severly criticized as having very bad pronounciation as the actors were not in fact Esperanto speakers but merely memorized the words. Having watched the film I must disagree. The pronunciation is certainly no model for a beginning Esperantist to emulate however it is not nearly as bad as I had been lead to believe. It should be noted that the main star of this movie is a young (pre Star Trek) William Shatner.

Thanks Again David,

Barry Savage

Thanks very much for the comments, Barry, I'm very glad you liked the article.

1. I'm afraid that the early film clips I mentioned are no longer accessible. Maybe in the archives of Pathe and Gaumont?

2. I'll be saying a bit more about the other items you mention in subsequent articles. Jan Fethke next!

Keep in touch and thanks again.

Barry, I saw part of Angoroj once, which is how captivating I found it I guess ... I'd be very keen to see it again some time to see how or why I felt that way, but to be honest it has in my experience a rather dreadful reputation as well.

The Incubus I'd love to see ...

» Labestul - More on Angoroj

Bernd,

My recommendation of Angoroj was not so much
on its artistic merit (I haven't really made up
my mind on that since I've only seen it once) but
rather on its historical significance.

Not only was it an original Esperanto movie but
the actors include many well known Esperantists of
the day. For example Raymond Schwartz plays a
small part. He was the primary driving force behind the Esperanto Cabaret in Paris called I believe "La Verda Kato". I wish I had been around in those days and in that location. Oh Well.

Amike via,

Barry Savage

» David_Poulson - Tuta Nuda

I once - in a fit of madness - let myself be talked into doing an Esperanto cabaret act, which involved me playing the guitar and singing some of Raymond Schwartz's rude limericks (the milder ones) and then doing a ventriloquist routine with an enormous female doll, wearing only a small bathtowel.

The doll not me!

I'm still embarrassed to remember it but only the other day came across the tattered script I cobbled together for the occasion.

Here's an excerpt.

Jen estis fraulin' en Vieno,
Konata pro tio kaj jeno;
S^xi havis l'ideon
Kromnomi bideon
Sidejo de virin-higieno.

Oh boy!
