» eyetech - alternatives to storing radioactive waste AssignmentI am Environmental Commissioner faced with a decision. The military wants to deposit nuclear waste from inactive warheads on the ocean floor. Any suggestions for this essay -- posted by eyetech » Lawhawk - This sounds like an interesting essay. This sounds like an interesting essay. You have your work cut out for you but you might want to look at how radioactive waste is currently stored and compare it with the way the teacher has suggested storing it. There are a bunch of websites that detail how radioactive waste is stored and how it could be stored.Good luck with your assignment. -- posted by Lawhawk » kaf3 - Underwater storage Ramblings. Nuclear waste storage is a discussion topic riddled with misinformation, misperception and emotion. Can you trust government on the matter? Many people don't think so. Judging from what I know about the way government reports get watered down by "politics," I'd say we're lucky we survive any decisions. Those who have operated the government's nuclear facilities don't seem to have a good record. What do the nonprofits have to say about the issue? They may be the only groups with the time and resources to study the issues in detail. Are there independent study groups with no point of view to defend? Good question. One problem with dumping in the ocean is that it is an easy "out" because it is far enough away from people that there are few to complain about it. Another problem is that the ease of disposal can lead to lax administration of the sites. Retrieval and repair isn't a cheap option or there may be no option at all. This doesn't sound sensible.-- posted by kaf3
