» Marge_Talt - Graham, What do you feed your clematis and when? I'm always Graham,What do you feed your clematis and when? I'm always scatty about feeding plants in the garden; I have a hard enough time remembering to feed potted plants! If mine are really lucky, they get a top dressing of compost or bagged manure, but I've got three really neat clematis given me by a net buddy and I'd like to give them the best! TIA Marge

Then another blood etc., later in the season. They really are heavy feeders these plants. Graham Leatherbarrow -- posted by GrahamL » Marge_Talt - Thanks, Graham... They are certain I've buried a tasty carcase when I use either bloodmeal or bonemeal and if only they dig down far enough, they will find it. Needless to say, my plants don't appreciate this excavation :-) Would 10-10-10 plus some super phosphate do the same, do you think? Marge

I would really like to try a few here in Hawaii but we never get much below 54F and that is at night, Nov - Feb. They are expensive here, mailorder only and about $30 by the time you pay shipping. theresa beerman-- posted by theresaBIH » WendyD_2_2 - Wendy Doran I have 2 clematis I would like to climb the same tr Wendy DoranI have 2 clematis I would like to climb the same trellis, but cannot find any does or don'ts about planting them together eg. How close is too close? Thank you -- posted by WendyD_2_2 » CarolWallace - Theresa, I don't know the specific answer to your question, but Theresa, I don't know the specific answer to your question, but in looking up various varieties of clematis most seem to have an upper range of hardiness to zone 8 -- which implies that your climate would be too hot for most of them. Most clematis insist on warm tops and cool feet, which is difficult in a tropical climate. However, C. viticella is more tolerant of warm root systems, and might be a possibility. At least one planting guide for clematis that I've seen recommends that you dig a hole for each plant that is 18" wide to give the roots room to spread. In my own garden I have two clematis each planted approximately 18" from the roots of a climbing rosebush, and they do quite well. I have many shrubs around the garden that act as host to more than one clematis, if you are short of space it's a good way of slipping in additional plants. Probably best to choose clematis that flower at different times to each other, that way you get even more value for your efforts. One other point to note, if your host shrub is evergreen, like Yew for example, choose clematis that flower late in the season, thus avoiding having to look at clematis dead growth in the winter and spoiling the look of your shrub (obviously with ones like Montanas, you will have to leave this growth as it flowers early using this old wood to flower from.)
