Mastiff puppy and busy schedule
This archived discussion is "read only".
» diane1991 - A new puppy... I'm getting a mastiff male puppy at the end of April and the timing couldn't be worse. My work is seasonal and the month of May is our busiest. I won't be working really long hours, but I don't think I'd be able to go home during my lunch hour to take the puppy outside to go potty. We've been waiting over a year for this puppy. Any suggestions???-- posted by diane1991 » mastiffs2005 - Re: A new puppy... In response to A new puppy... posted by diane1991:Diane, that's going to be a really tough one! With mastiff puppies, those first few weeks are your bonding time, and your being there would make the transition and separation easier on the puppy. But I do understand that after waiting a year, you don't want to miss your chance at getting your puppy!! How old will your puppy be when it comes home to you? If it is old enough, you might look into Doggie Daycare - I used to work at one of those, and we had SO much fun!! But if your puppy hasn't had all of his shots, some doggie daycares aren't set up to keep them separate from the other dogs. In that case, do you have a teenager in your family who might be out of school by then? Of course if you're not going to be working long hours, your puppy will be sleeping quite a bit. You could invest in a crate, which is an excellent way to begin your housetraining anyway! Just get a big one! If you're going to be gone longer than that, you can look into feeders that attach to the crate, but longer than that is stretching it to leave a puppy crated, imo. Others make work hours work with their new puppies with no problem! Thanks for your question! And please feel free to drop in any time and let us know how your puppy is doing - and of course we'd love to see pictures after your busy work season is over with! Have a great day, -- posted by mastiffs2005 » diane1991 - Re: Re: A new puppy... In response to Re: A new puppy... posted by DarCheek:Thanks for the advice. The puppy will be 8 weeks old when we get him. Yes, we are going to be getting a crate (a BIG one). We don't have kids, but I have "nice" parents who might be interested in helping out on the days that I just can't get away from work during the day. May is a very intense month at work, but after that - I should have no problem leaving during the day. I appreciate your reply and I'd be more than happy to send a picture when we get him! -- posted by diane1991 » mastiffs2005 - Re: Re: Re: A new puppy... Have fun! -- posted by mastiffs2005 » biogardener - That's perfect If you have parents who can come over at a certain time each day, you should do fine. In some places, you can hire pet sitters who drive from place to place all day long attending to each pet's needs. Parents are better, of course, because you want the puppy to bond with your parents as well, I would think.-- posted by biogardener » diane1991 - Re: Re: Re: Re: A new puppy... We did an "about face" when a mastiff walked by us with his owner! We followed him to their booth and FELL IN LOVE! We are very excited about finally getting a puppy. Thanks for your advice. -- posted by diane1991 » mastiffs2005 - first mastiff... In response to Re: Re: Re: Re: A new puppy... posted by diane1991:Oh I'm so excited for you! And yes, they sure can make you do a double-take when you see them, but their personality is what steals your heart! Here's a picture of our new fawn female - she's 4 weeks old... And you're very welcome! -- posted by mastiffs2005
