» JaneHollis - Astrantia major

<img src="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages..." align="left">
I love the rich claret colour of this Astrantia major cultivar (I think it is Hadspen Blood, but it might be Ruby Wedding). It prefers moist fertile soil, but will tolerate drier conditions. I find it grows well in my butterfly border which is dry and sunny, although I did water it well whilst it was getting established. It will grow in semi shade as well.

» JaneHollis - Name Change

Just a note of explanation for the change of name for this discussion. I am hoping to have a thread for each month of the years, illustrating what is of interest in the garden at that time. Of course, June is easy, might be trickier in December!

» JaneHollis - California poppies

<img src="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages..." align="left">
Here is one of my favourite annuals - the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica). The seeds are available in a mixture of colours - white, cream, yellow and orange. However, they self seed each year and I have found the paler colours gradually die out, leaving the orange ones. They look great in my hot border mixed in with red, orange and yellow flowers and purple foliage.

The foliage is attractive too, a greeny-grey colour and rather feathery in appearance. They love full sun and well drained soil.

» JaneHollis - Geranium 'Ann Folkard'

<img src="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages..." align="left">
More hot magenta! This is Geranium 'Ann Folkard', a member of the useful hardy geranium family which will grow in most soils in sun or shade. 'Ann Folkard' has long scrambling stems bearing yellowish green leaves, whist the flowers are produced throughout the summer. It grows to about 60cm high and 1m across. I have planted 'Ann Folkard' to scramble through Rosa 'The Fairy', a low growing light pink rose. This plant is hardy to -15 deg C.

» JaneHollis - Lilium 'Fire King'

<img src="http://www.suite101.com/files/topics/345..." align=left>
Lilies are great for adding that extra splash of colour to a border, and they don't take up a lot of room. This lily is called 'Fire King' and pops up every year in my hot border to add some fiery orange to contrast with the bronze foliage of my Phormium. So far, no sign of the dreaded lily beetle, which was a real pest in my previous garden.

Love your flower pics - especially this Lilium.
I've photographed a few too.
Yours have especially nice color.
What kind of camera did you use? Is it digital?
Please show us some more of these.

Thanks Bill. The lovely things about lilies (and most bulbs) is that there is always room to squeeze in a few more - even in a crowded garden! I have had a quick cruise around your site and will be back soon to gain more inspiration. As my garden is quite mild by UK terms, I am sure I will find some unusual bulbs I can experiment with.

I have used a digital camera to take the pics in this gallery. It is a Kodak DC4800 - 3.1 megapixel resolution. I know that a really good photographer can take brilliant photos with any camera - but for a keen amateur like me, the choice of camera can make a real difference. I love this model - it is really easy to use and offers a range of modes - from fully automatic exposure, through aperture priority to fully manual. It also has an exposure compensation mode and a zoom lens. I love it!

I am hoping to create a plant gallery for each month of the year, so there should be plenty more pix. If you are interested in photography, have you checked out the Suite101 Photography topic - Wendy has lots of brilliant tips, and a photo crituque board.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the photography page.
I've got a Kodak Digital Camera also but it's about eight years old and I think I will be udating it soon for one that takes better close-up shots.

Here is the link to my album of some of the Lilium shots I took at our Melbourne Flower Show.
