» CarolWallace - Sitting down

I have chairs and benches everywhere in my yard.Sometimes I even sit in them - but rarely for more than three minutes - unless it's pitch dark out. If I can see, then I can always see a weed that demands immediate removal, or a flower that needs deadheading or something.

We installed lights in the garden, so that I can find my way in and sit down and enjoy - but luckily they are so dim that I can't see these things after dark and so actually get to stop and smell the flowers.

» JaneHollis - Oh dear ...

... I must be lazier than you, Carol. I do enjoying sitting down with a cup of tea and a magazine in the garden. I do notice those weeds and things, but I just think I'll do it later ... and then forget!

Mind you, with a 3yr old daughter I don't often get more than 3 minutes sitting down - but I would if I had the chance.

By the way, it is snowing here today - quite hard as well. The weather is going mad! We've had all the signs of spring and then suddenly a snowfall. Yet no snow at all, and hardly a frost, during January and February when we expect it!

» CarolWallace - I'll get better about it

Right now it's spring and I haven't even begun to have my fill of being nack in the garden. The sit and jump stage usually lasts until the garden has filled out and I am beginning to get weary of deadheading and weeds. It's good exercise, anyway.

We are having lots of rain - but that is supposedly normal - April showers and all. I've had more good gardening days that ever before this early in spring - and much, much more in bloom than normal - I'll bet we are two to three weeks ahead of time.

The down side of that is that the indoor projects I had figured I'd get done while waiting for the gardening season to begin are progressing very slowly.

» JaneHollis - Weather problems

Glad you're getting some good weather at last. But why is it when you have lots of indoor jobs to do, the weather is beautiful and you just feel you have to be outside. Yet when you have lots of gardening tasks to get done, the heavens open and the rain (or snow) comes down.

By the way, luckily, our snow turned to rain after a few hours, so not too much damage done to the plants.

» Gay_Klok - Oh! To have some rain

now that April's here

I just happen to have a piece i cut out of our morning newspaper in my hand when reading this:

"Hobart has recorded its driest 12 months in 117 years

Hobart recorded just 342.8mms [my memory is it should be about 680mms] from April 1999 [Autumn] to March 2000

The bureau's rainfall and temperature data showed March 2000 was both drier and warmer *** march was warmer by 0.5 and 1.5 degrees

» JaneHollis - Rain

Hi Gay,
We gardeners are never happy are we - either too much rain or too little! Interesting that you are experiencing dry weather now - do you remember you forecast that last year, when many US and UK editors were moaning about drought problems. You said then that you thought international weather trends caught up with you about 6 months later!

» droberts - Sitting in the garden

Yesterday was the first day of the season -- when the gardens at Knebworth House are open to the public--. It rained all day and so only the brave, or very keen gardeners, ventured out into the gardens. We have over 20 seats and benches but it was to wet to sit.
If I am planning a garden I will sit in the middle and just take it in. This might happen several times. Then it's move to a corner. It helps me to get a real feel for that garden, or area of garden.
It is very rare that I have time to just sit in the garden and enjoy the atmosphere, but once in a while it does happen. Either first thing in the morning or late evening. I do find though that my thoughts go to 'How about moving that plant there' or 'try that one here or there'

Having somewhere to perch is, to my mind, absolutely essential. It is not good for a gardener to be continually working (however much it is enjoyed). Part of being in a garden is to soak-up the atmosphere, to enjoy the nature around, to pick-up the aromas and the list could go on and on. Providing you enjoy sitting in your garden then DO IT! If you are unable to relax in your back-yard, borders etc. then a little redesigning might be necessary so that you can. (And if you are like me you will have to sit in the middle while you plan)

» JaneHollis - Sopping wet!

Nice to hear from you again David. Such a shame your first day of the season was so wet. The weather has been just the same here - not much sitting out in the garden this week!

I like the way you plan your gardens. Such a good idea to actually sit in it whilst you plan - must be more effective than sitting indoors with pencil and paper.

Hope the weather is kinder to your visitors soon!
