Sow Now for the Late Summer GapRead the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » KateBerry - Nicotianas I'm crazy about white flowers, and crazy about fragrant flowers. So Nicotiana sylvestris (sp?) just made perfect sense. I've planted it in a ring around my garden and by both gates. Hoping to smell it wherever I go. But dwarfs would be perfect, since I could line the paths, too!-- posted by KateBerry » JaneHollis - More nicotianas How small do you want to go? Nicotiana sylvestris is one of the biggest at 3-4' but hybrids such as Sensation are a little smaller at 2-3' and still wonderfully fragrant. Thompson and Morgan claim that some of the smaller hybrids such as Dwarf White Bedder (16") are fragrant, but I haven't tried them myself. Your idea of lining a path with them sounds lovely - a fragrant walk!-- posted by JaneHollis » Carol Wallace - Slapping head and feeling REALLY stupid! I must have a zillion nicotiana alata seedlings. I've been transplanting them over at the neighbors. Why, until now, did I never think of sticking a fewinto my own path to the gazebo???? Especially since the white flwoers would be somehwat helpful in guiding us in the dark??See, Kate - we're ALWAYS learning - and even the beginner can teach. That's why gardening is so great! And Jane - I'm definitely looking for the Sensation nicotiana. I need short ones - but I demand the scent! -- posted by Carol Wallace » Carol Wallace - Tobacco Actually, the smokable kind is really lovely. Beautiful pink flowers. . . (wicked grin.)-- posted by Carol Wallace » JaneHollis - Grow your own! Don't tell your husband, Kate, but they advertise smoking tobacco plants in the classified ads in some of our gardening magazines over here!Seriously, though, I do hope he does manage to give up, for your sake and for his. -- posted by JaneHollis » Carol Wallace - Tobacco plants Seeds of Change has it - but so does out local herb farm. I grew it last year and it really was lovely. A nice, soft pink. And fragrant. I didn't try collecting and cuting the leaves,though.-- posted by Carol Wallace » KateBerry - Growing tobacco There's a tobacco farm on the way from our house to the Army post, and they started planting recently. Evidently, he starts his plants indoors, too -- they had five guys on the back of a huge tractor plopping plants into the ground. When I drove by there today, I nearly stopped to hit them up for a seedling or two. But, then again, I don't need temptation to break our pact growing in our own backyard.-- posted by KateBerry » JaneHollis - Tobacco farming Kate,Do they have security on the tobacco farm? I can just imagine all the local smokers creeping in to filch a few leaves and rolling their own! -- posted by JaneHollis » KateBerry - Tobacco patrols Suprisingly, they don't. The farm is right along the main road, spanning both sides of it. Now, by "main road" I mean one travelled by maybe 200 cars a day where the top speed is 45. It is, after all, in Kansas.Actually, the farm is stunning. There's a huge main house, and a smaller guest home off to one side. They've designed the covered bridge leading to the fields to look like a third small house. Very picturesque, and very reminiscent of Gone With the Wind. I have to slow down and sigh enviously each time I pass. -- posted by KateBerry « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
