I refer all such questions to our household member least likely to kill plants by neglect or ignorance. Did I leave any doubt? That would be Judy. ;-)

» tooky400 - dwarf banana trees

I planted a dwarf banana tree from a corm around two months ago. It now has like four leaves. Can I plant it outside now? I live in Illinois. If so, do I plant it in full sun or what? I can't find info anywhere. Thanks.

I have been tempted to try a Musa basjoo, but they are rather expensive and the southern Oregon coast has cool, windy summers. I can't imagine that they would do well in my garden.

» PostCool1 - Sick banana Plant -- HELP!

Banana plant lost its leaves in a accident - its trying to create a new leaf, but the new leaf appears to be turning black. This plant is 3 years old, about 5'7" high. What do I do now? Can it be saved? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

In response to message posted by Diana_Pederson:

Bananas certainly don't like the cold.
In the northern hemisphere of Australia they grow well. As a kid, we had one in our backyard, along with a pawpaw and a mango tree.
Since I've moved south, they will only grow here if you keep them away from the frost and up against a wall where they can get the radiated heat. Even then, they grow very slowly in the cold climate, but will still eventually produce fruit.

Bonsai boy, I am presuming that you are not in the USA (centres vs centers ;-)
Could you tell us the variety of banana that is good to zone 4? It would be easier to find here in Northern Arizona.
Thanks,
Raffles

» Ottawagoa - Sick banana Plant -- HELP!

I've had my Banana Plant in Eastern Ontario Canada for 2 and a half years now and the best trick is over the winter take a regular lamp with an adjustable arm and replace the 60w incandescent bulb and replace it with 23 real watts or near that size Compact Flourescent Called Daylight (The Kalvin Scale should be around 6500k which is that white glow you find in office buildings) and position it over the banana plant, the funny thing is over the winter it actually stunts it's growth but has a massive and canopy of 10-15 medium sized leaves strong enough to hold my day geckos.

In the summer it grows anywhere from 12-20"cm (I just put it out May 25 and it's already grown 11cm with 5 new leaves which means 2.2cm of growth per leaf instead of .5cm~ in the winter).

It makes a really neat effect as the plant seems to change appearance over the season and it's been addicting watching the growth factors.

Two weeks before I put it out I retop the soil level to cover the roots and a bit of the "bulb" thats at the end.
I Then fertilize my Banana plant once a week for 3 weeks with fish water I take out of my piranha tank (They cause a big mess which gives a nice organic fertilizer that the banana plant eats up)but miracle grow will work just as fine (just use their directions, not mine.)

I've never had an issue with the plant and even if the plant's leaves get cut there is no browning or decay of plant material until the whole leaf is wilted back under the canopy.
