» Dan_Ellsworth - Zinnias and your Grandma Brown

Diana, your mention of summer flowers, especially zinnias, reminded me that from the first I knew your Grandma Brown, as I was dating her daughter, she was a gardener who kept a colorful garden through the summer with such plants. I can hardly think of zinnias without remembering her.

Since her gardening eventually ran afoul of her arthritis, the idea of featuring zinnias and a marigold that are friendly to the disabled seems to me a beautiful remembrance of her. Thank you for a reminder of one of the best people I've ever met.

Somehow I think you'll put these flowers in the right place.

» Diana_Pederson - you're right

Hi Uncle Dan:

You are absolutely right. I can't think of that green house on Eden road without picturing the huge flower/vegetable garden between the house and the barn. Wonder how big that really was? An acre?

» Dan_Ellsworth - Remembering a gardener

Big enough. Yes, that garden just about defined the place. My farmboy "eye", admittedly out of practice, says less than an acre, but it was one serious garden. I like the philosophy of having flowers and vegetables in the garden - that feeds people two ways. And some people, like her, are just "summer flower" people: Late in the season, when the heat's on, they're still perky. I remember her as a gardener, "down to earth" you might say, and I realize that if I remember a gardener I remember this:

There is nobody I remember as just a gardener. Anybody that tends a garden probably does other good things, too. Maybe quilts and genealogies, or (a benefit of dating her daughter) major Sunday dinners.

Diana, if your contributions here make it possible for some grandparents to keep gardening longer, you are helping enrich the memories of grandchildren you never will meet. Not too shabby; carry on. :-)
