» Deborah_Jeter - Hi, Diana, I'm using this discussion form more as a guestbook

Hi, Diana,

I'm using this discussion form more as a guestbook since I found your "enabling garden" web ring.
It is a small world. I have an aquarium that has been used for nothing except a demonstration
to some students about how composting works a few years ago. I was thinking that it might make
a good terrarium, but what would I use for the base? Could something like this work if I actually
placed the aquarium over some plants already in the flower garden? I guess that would be kind
of stupid, huh? That's ok, you can go ahead and laugh.

» Diana_Pederson - Hi Deborah: I don't understand--doesn't the aquarium already

Hi Deborah:

I don't understand--doesn't the aquarium already have a bottom? Normally terrariums aren't growing outside. It's definitely an indoor type probject.

If you need a terrarium, you can often pick them up at garage sales for as little as 50 cents to $3.00 for the larger ones. I think people receive these as gifts, kill the plants, and get rid of the container not realizing how much they usually sell for!

If I can help you, I will. First read the articles preceeding this one.

» kniblett - What type of animals?

I was wondering what types of animals can be sucessfully kept in a terrarium which is kept in medium light, and at a warm temperature? I am interested in starting a terrarium, but also want to include some creatures. Thanks for your help!

» Diana_Pederson - Vivariums

Hello:

You want a vivarium rather than a terrarium. Most critters would damage the plants in your terrarium. Visit a local pet shop to get some ideas on plants and critters that work well together. Most that I have visited have these vivariums on display and they should be able to give you good advice.

I am wondering if hermit crabs would work?
