Planting Flowers

» JessieBK - wild flowers HiEvery year I try to plant wild flowers in this one particular flower bed. I have been trying to grow them from seeds. I plant the seeds, but weeds grow up instead an choke out the seeds. Should I start them in pots and then plant them in my flower bed? Any suggestions? Thanks Jessie K -- posted by JessieBK » ErnestDobbs - Re: wild flowers In response to message posted by JessieBK:I suggest that the weeds are not growing up "instead" of the wild flower seed, but growing up "with" the flower seed. The particular weeds in the flower bed are apparently faster in growth and cover the growing plants from the flower seed. The answer is probably (as you already suggest) planting them in pots where the seed can grow, clean the weeds out of the flower bed, and plant the wild flower plants. They will have a "head start" on any future weeds that might appear in the bed. Good luck! -- posted by ErnestDobbs » JessieBK - wild flowers Thank you so much! I will try planting them in pots and then transplant them. Is it too late to start them? Also, the bed I want to plant them in has a downhill slant and watering and rain causes the dirt to wash off. Should I add good topsoil and then mulch after I transplant? Also, I saw an add in the April issue of Southern Living about some kind of "carpet roses" some sort of ground cover. Do you know anything about them? I have an ancient rose bush that I want to dig up but I love to dry the petals and use them for oil. Would you mind if I asked another question? I also have a very old lilac that was once very beautiful. Now it only gets a few blooms and has a lot of dead, woody stalks growing in the middle. Every year I try to cut the dead "branches" out, but every year it gets worse. Is it time for it to go? I think it is probably over 4O years old.I can't express enough how much I appreciate your advice! Jessie K. -- posted by JessieBK » NightSweet - Can I use dirt that is out there? I am fairly new to outdoor gardening, and recently we moved to a new place. The problem is that the old resdients had a big dog, and where I would like to put a garden is torn to shreds and full of stones which my husband and I have removed...but I am wondering if I am going to have to remove all of the dirt from there and replace it with soil, or can I just take half of it out and put soil there? Thanks Maria -- posted by NightSweet
