» LS1123 - Re: The Nightmare of Corporate "Care" in the Nursing Home "Indus

In response to message posted by CnaWatch:

Hi Cheryl,
My name is Linda, I live in California, and am (was) a CNA. I refused to work in SNF because I felt like it was a warehouse, no one was expected to get well and go home. I instead went to acute care, I love working as a CNA.
I now have a back injury and will never go back. I wanted to go to nursing school and become an RN, CNA was my step in that direction. I empathize with EVERYTHING you say.
This is my first time on this site, I found it by accident about forty-five minutes ago.
Good luck and keep up the fight...Peace, Linda

Hi Magic
I ran across your message while I was doing a report on Nursing Home Abuse. I'm hoping that by now things are fine but if not I think I can help. I have been a nurse for 12 years and majority of my career has been in Long Term Care. I'm currently enrolled in College to become an administrator for a Nursing Home and do everything in my power to stop the abuse. Please feel free to email me at spfisher@zwallet.com if you have any questions.

In response to message posted by CnaWatch:

I am a resident in a skilled nursing facility and I must say we have some fine nurses. However, we have a couple of overbearing, abusive, bullies who repeatedly verbally abuse residents and have all kinds of methods to irritate and aggravage them, such as making patients who complain wait until last for their medication, making loud verbal insults in the hearing of residents they don't like, etc. Residents have made complaint after complaint after complaint about these nurses but nothing ever is accomplished, in one case I heard one of these nurses abusing the Director of Nurses, telling her "you can't fire me, the administrator won't let you". We also have a fairly high incidence of theft, although through much complaining and threats of publicity this has been reduced. It is my beleif that there is a very high incidence of drug abuse among some employees, to the point that I suspect some residents are not getting their full dosage of controlled substances, and I am told this is very common in nursing homes everywhere. Making a complaint to Human Resources in this state is a joke, they just ask the administration if the charges are true and of course they deny them and that is the end of the matter. I do not beleive the public really wants to know the true state of affairs in nursing homes; they just dump unwanted relatives and prefer not to be bothered. The effort to clean up the nursing home mess would be almost unimiginable.

At the nursing home where I reside we have begged for the installation of recording video cameras in the hallways, the answer "too expensive". They are primarily worried that the film could possibly be used against them in a lawsuit.

» nat18 - Mental anguish towards grandmother in family owned facility

My husbands grandmother who is in another state & being cared for by her daughter in a home based nursing facility is not being allowed to communicate with her son by telephone or any other member of the family. It all started a few months ago when Ima came out & checked her sister(Irene) out of the hospital & whisked her & her mother(Etta) away from their home because she said they were too old to care for themselves. Etta & Irene were very upset to leave & we were told they were sedated to get them to go with Ima. Ima took control of her money & now wants to sell Etta's home for that money. Etta wants the home to stay in the family & before she left she made a quitclaim deed to her son(J.B.), giving him the property, he is in very poor health. Ima has now told our family that we can no longer speak to Etta or Irene anymore although they want to. She says it just makes them want to come home more. Before when we would speak to them they were very homesick & want to come home. J.B. wants them home but does not have the money to get them home. He is very upset because he is not allowed to speak to his mom. Also Ima called & said she has hired a lawyer & is going to sell Etta's home which was deeded to J.B. Ima had Rarely had any contact with her mother before this & didn't even come to her dad's funeral. Etta has had a heart attack since being in Ima's care. She was a very active & healthy woman when she lived here. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm experiencing a very similar situation with my sister and mother. My sister moved in with my mother after she had a stroke and is not allowing any family members to have any contact with my mother. I know my mother is suffering from Psychological abuse which is so hard to fight in some states. Most abuse laws cover physical abuse but not Psycological abuse. This is a hard battle to fight and I know yours is as well. I wish you luck.

In response to Re: Nursing home abuse posted by proactive:

I am a resident in a skilled nursing facility; I am a 62 year old male with severe herniated discs, 4th stage renal disease, and very severe arthritis. While I would have to rate this facility as one of the better nursing homes, virturally every type of abuse chronicled on this site has occurred here at one time or another. One of our biggest problems is an underpaid and demoralized staff, especially in the lower paid ranks. Short staffing is also a problem, although not a much so as in the past. Our situation has been helped by the employment of a new administrator, who seems determined to improve quality of care, but much of her effort is to little avail due to a DON who has been here for years and is related to many of the employees, and the ones she is not related to have so much dirt on her she can't afford to assert any discipline. Theft was once a tremendous problem, we still have that problem, but it has been abated. I have reason to believe that drug diversion and illegal drug use is common, although the new administrator must have an excellent intelligence system because many of the dopers have been discharged. One of the problems of abuse is with the bed-bound patients who are never seen by oher residents. Without family menbers to oversee their care, no one knows the quality of care they are receiving. I have been president of the veterans council on four different occasions and vice-president the remaining time I've been at this facility. A number of years ago we were forced to take the home to court over some patient's rights issues, which we won and makes the administration here take us more seriously. State Human Resources Ombudsmen are a joke; but we have gotten substantial help from the local United Way Ombudsman. The main problem is that families throw away their old members and store them in warehouses we call nursing homes. Without family interest and oversight chances are your family member will get minimal care.

Are you sure you're not in the same nursing home I'm in, or are they all alike?
