» talleyrlc - Homework denies kids of sleep
Unfortunately, my kids ride the bus home from school (which is 30 miles away) and by the time they get done with homework, it is very late. For some reason, teachers feel they must assign homework. I resent homework because it takes time away from family time. I also believe that my children are at school long enough each day and do no need additional school work at home. This homework keeps them up and since they have to get up in the morning to catch the bus by 6:45 they are tired. I believe there should be no homework.I think the teachers would not like it if I imposed on their "time" by bringing laundry for my kids to fold, or a game for us to play, or a book for us to share together, or an animal for them to feed. But, teachers don't think twice about imposing on our time with homework and then complain when the kids are cranky or falling asleep at school because they've stayed up every night to do homework.

In response to message posted by talleyrlc:I can definitely understand your situation. I think the best way to tackle this one is to communicate with the teachers. Ask the teachers, "how long do you think these homework should take?" And if they say an approximate time that is way below than the time your kids are taking up to finish the homework, then the teachers need to analyze the situation more. Are the other kids in the class taking about the same time as your kids when it comes to homework? Sometimes it only takes one parent to bring up an issue that is concerning most parents in the class. It is important to address this issue with the teachers, keep the communication lines open and work out a solution from there. You may even like to log down the time your kids take to finish homework, per subject. Let's say it takes 20 minutes to do an English homework but two hours to do a Math homework, then you can gauge where exactly the problem lies and the teachers can investigate further. I hope you get this situation solved as early as possible. Let me know what happens and thanks for your message.

» miarobinson - Avoid C's and D's by Gettting Enough Z's
Author: Dorothy Kropf (Suite 101,Education K-12 Hub)This article stressed the importance of children getting enough sleep on a daily basis in order for them to be able to concentrate, behave, and to stay healthy. Sleep is very important in the lives of children and if they don't get enough sleep then their daily behaviors and attitudes will be affected by this. Children need to be able to go to school, listen, pay attention, and get their work done without falling asleep and being cranky during the school hours. This wouldefinitelyly affect their grades while at school, if they are not learning but sleeping instead. Children who are in school need and should be getting at least 8 1/2 hours of sleep every night. In order for parents to attain good night sleep patterns and routines, they can cut off the children's caffeine intake, they can help their children wind down before bedtime, and they can also set a good example by going setting a routine of going to bed early themselves. All of these work together in hopes to establish a new routine to help their children get enough Z's and to avoid C's and D's.

In response to Homework denies kids of sleep posted by talleyrlc:Hi talleyrlc.
The problem why kids aren't sleeping enough is not by the amount of homework being left to them, but how they manage their time. Imagine your kid thinking of games and all those types of things everytime. I feel it because I am a student. But everytime I do homework, I see the radio beside me, my iPod, my playstation, etc. Therefore I feel that I need to touch those things while I'm doing my homework . One day, I had an easy homework and that was to make 3 multiple choice questions about electricity, and I spent 2 hours just to finish two. So I guess you should think about it because it is quite true. Try looking at your kid while his doing homework and see if he has anything beside him. Also if it is in a computer, you'll always see that messenger is on, the e-mail webpage is also on, and that the music player is also on.
