» Prometheus - Libertarian posturing.

It's very funny to hear the two-faced posturing of libertarians on issues
like these.

Elian's mother lost her life to give her son the chance to live what I live
everyday and what I am ashamed to say I rarely give a second thought.

Incredible claptrap. His mother probably had no intention of losing her life,
or even risking it significantly. Most likely, like most emmigrants worldwide,
she didn't give a fig about freedoms so much as being able to move to a
nation where she could earn more. She might even have wanted to move simply
to be with family.

But instead we're treated to pompous, windy imaginings of what she thought.

And mysteriously, libertarians never bring up that the decision to come here
seems to imply that she would gladly pay taxes, let Elian be drafted, fill
out census forms, put up with shelves full of government regulations, etc.
that the libertarians always whine about. Every immigrant is a demonstration
that there is a market for social contracts like ours.

» pseudoerasmus - agreed

Not just libertarians, but Americans in general have this bizarre delusion that immigrants come to the USA because they so value the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion, etc., but in reality only a small minority of them are seeking such things. The vast majority of the world's migrants are economic migrants in search of making money and sending it back home. For this particular purpose, any place lucrative would do.

Does anyone who which country receives the second largest number of Chinese emigrants? (The USA is number #1).

The answer is unbelievable. Russia.
