A couple of questions for all of you.

1) Did you have a lot of trauma( I mean the
really bad kind) when you were a child?
I did and I think this is a huge contributor
to NES

2)Have you ever awaken the next morning, sometimes horrified and not remembering the carnage you caused, i.e. food all over the house?

3) OA, a 12 Step program? I doubt I would have stopped drinking without AA, but now, pretty much like smoking, the thought of drinking alcohol is degusting.

4) As I posted earlier, I tried OA maybe 10 years ago. Have any of you had or known of anyone that has overcome NES via OA?

I have not tried any AA or OA programs but I gather that NES is being in an almost semi conscious state so therefore this is very difficult to control, thus leading to more of a habit. So to follow those programs may be difficult to incorporate in that state.
Yes I did have trauma as a child so maybe you are
right when this is a result finding comfort in food.
Interesting

Cookiemonster Yes I also have had a traumatic childhood. with an alcoholic father and brother whom I thought would kill each other at night maybe us also never know what can happen when people are drunk. we are all addicts (which vary with each sibling of course) in my family, but I can say we have problems with alcohol and
chemicals too. Im looking inot this about being frightened to saty asleep but I also noticed on one side that chemical imbalance can be a factor as well which wakes us up. so the standard chemical bi-logical and enviroment thing happens here too by the looks of things. It will be worked out im sure Im 78 kilos here in Oz we use different scale im not sure what that is in pounds. I have also joined the gym but im too tired and un-enthused to go!! cya Precocia

In response to Any Success? posted by precocia2004:

There was some physical abuse in my family, although nothing that would have raised an eyebrow in a small Ohio town in the 1960's. It was the daily and humiliating emotional abuse from my father, who was a disturbed individual. Two of my other three siblings are wacko in their own way, and my other brother is probably too rich to care.

I think a lot of us who have had this condition for quite a long time have kind of resigned to it; like having a chronic bad back. For me, there is no doubt whatsoever that 99% of us had trauma as children and teenagers significant enough to re-wire out brains. No doubt, anti-depressants help us to live with it, But I don't think drugs can cure NES. I had two sessions with a therapist not too long ago who claims treatment that works maybe half the time for people how had childhood trauma. If you are like me, and can recall every episode of childhood trauma like it happened five minutes ago, and it gets replayed over and over in your mind a good bit of the time, then maybe this can help. I don't recall the name, but I will give it to all of you later.

Somehow, though all of this, I can only conclude I have an entire orchestra of guardian angels that kept me out of jail and the nut house, and allowed me, in some ways, a very rewarding life. If and when I am able to stop this compulsive behavior, I will share it with everyone, and that will be my calling. This disease is secretive and hardly known, even in the psychiatric communities. My heart goes out to all of you.

HI GWM I didnt realise you posted this message, my appologies. Im trying to stay clear of purley usings drugs to fix things as its not going to help with addiction, but I do need to stay on them for depression and mood stabilising. which I think is a catch 22 type situation. Im looking for psychothereapy groups and Im going to learn to paint. I have a canvas ready in the dining room. Im exited to see what the title will be! ha ha. Ciao Precocia

» 1precocia - Understanding

Hello, Whilst visisting my psych for med check up I showed him a print out of the descsiption of a Night Eater, from a well known site. He then, bless his little cotton socks! went on to say, Oh they(the pschiatric assosiation I take it)have found a name for it have they? and then laughed!!! this left me a little perplexed and thinking oh God maybe I am a hypocondriact, although I do remember a time where night eating was so upsetting to me I thought it would be a great idea to be in a prison where you couldnt get to a fridge at night and eat!!! How disturbing is that!! precocia1

» HereToHelp82 - Hi Everyone.

Hi Everyone. It sounds like you are experiencing what approximately 6 million Americans are in some degree or another. My name is Doug Relkin, and I am an Associate Producer with the Dr. Keith Ablow Show. Dr. Ablow was a regular expert psychiatrist on Oprah, CNN, and the Tyra Banks Show and has been given his own talk show to debut this upcoming fall. The show is the same type of show as another popular Dr. show, yet the difference is... Dr. Keith is actually a Doctor. Please feel free to visit drkeithtv.com for more information on Keith and our show. I am currently producing a show about various sleeping disorders, and have come across NES many times in my research. I know how disabilitating this disorder can be, not only to you but to those around you. I also know how important it is to treat it, sometimes with medication but more importantly with therapy. I have learned a lot about this disorder and think our show can help you. We plan on not only helping our guests who suffer from these disorders by providing them with Dr. Keith's advice, therapy and insight, but also to bring the truely misunderstood and devestating aspects of these disorders to the public. Hopefully in the process, we will encourage viewers who may be suffering quietly at home to seek help as well. There is hope for this disorder, but you can't do it alone. Please feel free to contact me at doug.relkin@drkeithtv.com so we can discuss this further. I know you probably have many questions for me, as I do for you. The first step is distinguishing you have a problem, that's the hard part, now with Dr. Keith's help, perhaps we can get you on the right path to fixing it.

I hope to hear from you soon

Doug
