As a backpacker in Thailand many years ago, Songkhran took me completely by surprise (I got literally doused not five minutes out the door). It was perhaps one of the coolest festivals I've ever had the opportunity to see and participate peripherally in, just because the atmosphere was so light and merry and everyone seemed to get involved. It's too bad drought has had an impact on the festivities, but I hope the lightness remains.-- posted by vborey
