It depends on how you define "founding". Nobody can deny that Raffles founded modern Singapore, but as you said, Singapore was already populated, only thing is it was better known as Temasek. If you believe the legend, Sang Nila Utama was the true founder of Singapore and it was him to change her name to "Singapura" or "Lion-City".

>>He was awarded the post of Assistant Secretary to the governor of Penang and traveled to Malaya, then a British colony of course, in 1805, aged 14.<<

Actually, no. Malaya wasn't a British colony at that stage, only Penang. The next possession was when Raffles got Singapore itself from the Sultan of Jahore. This led to arguments with the Dutch and in 1824 Britain and the Netherlands swapped possessions. Britain handed over Bencoolen (Bengkulu) in W. Sumatra and the Dutch handed over Malacca (Melaka) and recognised British ownership of Singapore.

Darn, Bingley, you read it closely!

BTW,
1. "The population of around three million"
Depends. According to the census from 2000, the total population is 4.0177 million.

2. "Malaya and the archipelago of islands in Southeast Asia have historically offered numerous havens for pirates; in addition, the very many small princedoms, extending no more than a single island, have made it very difficult for any power to enforce a high level of control over the area. In this case, control of suitable naval bases was of critical importance and, indeed, it continues to be so."

I can understand the need of naval bases because of pirates, but what did "the very many small princedoms" have to do with naval bases?

Well, you know, Sang Nila Utama was not a Westerner, therefore he doesn't count...

This is more about Singapore, really. Are there any international treaties that support Singapore's claim to Pedra Branca? There is a case before the ICJ concerning sovereignty over this tiny island, located 20 inm from Malaysia and 7 inm from Singapore.

If it helps, Britain constructed the Horsburgh lighthouse on Pedra Branca in 1851. Singapore claims to have always maintained it.

Anybody?
