» iman85 - teaching ABC'S

PLEASE HELP! I have been given two different opinions about teaching my daughter her letters. One side says I should only teach capital letters and not add the lower case letters until she has mastered this along with their sound. The other opinion says that I should only start teaching lower case letters since this is what is seen most. Then we go to the area of learning the sounds. Some say don't teach the name of the letter only the sound. Others say only teach the name of the letter. My daughter is only 2 1/2 but already she is into my son's flash cards begging me to "do the cards with her". She has already picked up the name of 5-10 letters just by hearing me helping my son with his spelling. HELP!

In response to message posted by iman85:

I heard all these opinions myself when I started homeschooling my toddler. I do know that focusing on only capital letters exclusively can be a problem. I have worked on all the concepts: the sound, the name of the letter, and both the upper and lower case letters. My son just turned five and understands all of these things pretty easily and is not in the least bit confused, except when he can't remember. But the idea of letters having a name, a sound, and both upper case and lower case forms is firmly ingrained in him.

But I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just have fun and take all advice with a grain of salt. Even mine.

As I understand it, the reason for learning upper case only in preschools is, I think, primarily a crowd control issue: to keep things simple. Then children have to relearn writing their names correctly using lower case letters when they enter kindergarten. So I have taught both since both exist and I havent' had to re-teach my son to write his name.

» Tutor10 - Learning letters and sounds

A friend has a 1st grader who has not learned his alphabet and is falling behind in school. He refuses to use "baby" books with the ABC's. Any advice for a text/learning materials? She does not want to have him tested for a learning disability because she doesn't believe in LDs--she doesn't spend much time with him, so I would like to help him now.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Go at your own pace. My son is 22months old I started singing to him the alphabeth song at 8 months. He watched the video Sesame Street Alphabeth Jungle when I was busy doing something and I believe it helped tremendously. Also, when I would put him in his high chair for meals he had on the refrigerator Leap Frogs Fridge Phonics and he would push the buttons and from that he learned the sounds of each letter. I didn't know he was going to pick up on it but he did. At 10 months he was saying his vowels and by 1 he knew all 26 letters of the alphabeths upper and lower case.
Any way I know that that is young to have learned but it proves that as parents we have to do what works without pressure and their brains like sponges soakes it right on up.
