Trivia #15

» StateOFranklin - The Nashville Frontier Recently I wrote an article about the settling of the Nashville TN area. A few short years later these settlers, under the Cumberland Compact, agreed on a name for their surrounding area. They named it the _____ District. For 10 points fill in the blank. You get an extra 25 points if you can explain the significance of that name. ;-> YMH&OS: -- posted by StateOFranklin » StateOFranklin - Re: A Guess In response to message posted by Mugwump53:Good guess, as that was the new name of the town, but I was looking for the the name they chose for the district. A hint...Aarron Burr was involved in trying to fix the problem that spurred the name. William Blount was later accused of being involved in the problem also. YH&OS PS: I apologize for missing so much time, I was the unwitting recipient of a really nasty virus. I just got my computer back from the shop. -- posted by StateOFranklin » Mugwump53 - Here We Go Again I almost forgot about this one.I will try several answers. One reference I found mentioned Manskers Creek, named after Kasper Mansker, one of the signers of the Cumberland Compact. Another one was Nashville, named after General Francis Nash, but that is too obvious. My last one is Davidson, named after a soldier who was killed at the battle of Cowans Pass. Of course, there is always Franklin, knowing you. -- posted by Mugwump53 » StateOFranklin - Re: Here We Go Again In response to message posted by Mugwump53:
Just a few short tidbits to help you find the answer as you seem to be the only one still working on it. The greatest problem facing the settlers in this region was getting their exports to market with the closure of the Mississippi River. Both William Blount and Aaron Burr were alledgedly involved in conspiracies against the person the District was named after. The District encompassed all areas drained by the Cumberland River in the present state of Tennessee. The name was given in an attempt to appease someone. Your Friend: -- posted by StateOFranklin » StateOFranklin - I admire your persistance! In response to message posted by Mugwump53:Washington was a good guess, as that was the name of one of the other 3 districts in TN. Time for more hints. The person the district was named for was a Governor. He was also a foriegner. You might find the answer in a book about Andrew Jackson as he was certified as an attorney in that (and other) districts. Thank you for keeping the trivia alive. An interesting sidenote, I just visited Henry Clay's Home outside of Lexington KY. It was very interesting. Happy and Healthy New Year to All. Jim Buckenmyer -- posted by StateOFranklin » StateOFranklin - Re: Too Much For Me In response to message posted by Mugwump53:I apologize, seems I got a little carried away. The area was known as the Miro District. It was named for Governor Miro of the Louisiana Territory, in an effort to appease the Spanish and help open the Mississippi to American, or at least Cumberland Valley shipping. Thanks for keeping it up. -- posted by StateOFranklin
