» Mugwump53 - Good start, both the article and the fort.....

An interesting start to the Fort Loudin story.

It sounded rather sunstantial. Why do you say it was not comfortable? With a barracks and officers quarters, it sounds better than most military encampments of the day.

The Cherokee sound like they were rather good sports, and stuck with the British when they had plenty of reason not to.

I'm looking forward to the next installment.

» Red - Jim, a most ...

interesting article. I enjoyed it very much.

I don't imagine those quarters were very comfortable even if they were some of the best of the time. I have visited several forts and I don't think I would want to be subjected to those conditions.

Jim, most interesting about the British lying to the Indians. Here, it was the British that the Indians followed. Tecumseh and Sir Isaac Brock got along marvelously. That is how Canada won the war of 1812. But later, after Brock was killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights, they did lie to the Iroquois as well. Even today, right here in the city where I live, we are having land disputes.

The King gave Joseph Brant a grant of land that ran 6 miles deep from the source to the mouth of the Grand River. Over the years, the white settlers took over this land. Now, the Native People want it back. They have a treaty and signed documents to back up their claims. I doubt if the Canadian government ever hands it over without a fight, which they really should do. The land does belong to the Natives, which means the house where I live as well.

The government can't really give the land back. It has been sold countless times over the course of 200+ years. What are they going to do? I have no idea. The outcome may be interesting.

Hope you enjoyed this piece of trivia from my corner of the country.
