» RogueWizard - Be Flexible
Although it has been a good while since I sat in the DM's chair, one thing that all must remember is to be flexible. You may well come up with a superb story-line, only to have the PC's come along, and by their own actions, not necessarily follow along with your ides to the letter. It is important that one not become too rigid with what they have planned as a DM. The article brings up an excellent example of the DM playing off the characters as well as the players working off the DM. This, if feel, is one of the keys to both a successful DM and Campaign. Remember, the DM's job should be to set the frame work for the PC's to navigate around, not so rigid with his own plans and ideas that no one can enjoy the gaming session.Just my two coppers
Thanks

I've seen the scene you described happen various ways in several adventures (but not to such wonderful...er, I mean catastrophic results).A wonderful point about being flexible as a DM. I'm currently writing several adventures for a friends campaign, and while I want them to run smoothly and weave into a full and wonderful plot, I know this particular gaming group too well and so I know my finely crafted scenarios will probably fly apart at the seams - probably for the better and enjoyment for all. Being too rigid leads to dull and boring adventures and while they may not harm the PCs, they can really harm the players who want some fun.

Comments from Brandy:I do love a flexible DM and when I dare to run an adventure, I prepare for the players to go completely off course. It is certainly a challenge to work around player choices.
I did not love the adventure where we nearly became crisp critters as much as you enjoyed reading about it. Thankfully though, my elf was unharmed, thanks for your concern, hrmph.
It's these things that remain in the memories of players for years to come.
