You make a good point. To many times, DMs and PCs interpret action as meaning hack-n-slash. A good DM knows that an action packed game is one where the PCs are actually moving the plot along and not following a set path. In my games, its the PCs who provide and drive the action, my job as DM is to just give them the setting.

It's nice to know someone actually reads what Brandy and I write. Stay tuned for a more indepth look at the role of the DM and ways to make it more fun.

You have at least 2 people reading what you write...and I would be willing to wager there's lots more ;)

Keep up the good work.

Oh, I'm reading. I just haven't had much opportunity to practice my DM'ing. I agree with Geoff and generally try to take that path with my players. Unfortunately, I still haven't mastered the art of getting them excited enough to take initiative in moving the plot forward. I have perhaps two players in six who take initiative toward that end, leaving the others feeling left out of the story unless I take special steps to make sure they feel included.
Just as "It's good to be the king", it's "tough to be the DM."

You know I think the off-line game Brandy and I are currently involved in we have that same problem.I am really enjoying this campaign and I think the other male player is as well but I think the ladies(our wives) we game with are feeling a bit intimidated by our kill them all and let the gods sort it out mentality. The DM is doing a fantastic job but has to contend with a wide range of role play styles. Jeck(played by the other guy who's name I wont mention)is a kobold warrior made with the pit fighters kit and my character Mera'din is a drow fighter/mage/thief using the assassin kit are currently the central focal point in the campaign simply because they are an oddity. The girls are a human druid and a elven mage but I think the problem the current DM must overcome is how to make them not so usual in the campaign.

yesterday i gamed at my mates hes only 12 and he doesnt Dm that much so his view of a good game was give the party everything so by the end of the night i was a mature adult dragon with 79 young sons and daughters a wife like celestial hard ass dragon- she would kick tiamats ass then again so would any dragon lol and my 3 mates got a city to share together- a huge city 2 of them are sons of 2 different gods who are cousins so they got 10 to all stat points and alot of other things like basically oh crap im on 1 hit point im gunna die oh wait my dads a god "dad Kick his ass for me " :/ And he has an army of like 40,000 dwarfs 40,000 elfs and about 69 versions of me flying around. my games are always LVL 1 or LVL 2 because a low level game brings realism to the story and im actually quite tight with the points and all that a good game which keeps all the party members happy is one that makes them all involved in the same thing for example there are 5 party members just base your story on there was 5 companions about 400 years ago who killed a half demon half devil Demi god who was building an army of demons and devils when the 5 companions (400 years ago) killed him and say he had 5 rings which all did somthing (which
they cant activate untill a certain level) and it was passed down from generation to generation until it reached there party members fingers and the demi god still had a few followers who are taking the souls of mages clerics and druids - anything to do with dragons and slowly the demi god is getting his form back but he needs the 5 rings to regain physical form i know(sounds like lord of the rings) but its not the point it keeps all the party members focused on the same thing so theres nothing different about there missions and no ones getting more attension that the other good luck Dming
