» mosiefar - Dressage - The Familiar Story of the April-October Romance

I felt a lot of sour grapes coming from the author in this article. Just because she had bad luck in her 40's with a young horse doesn't mean everybody will. My personal experience has been one of complete enchantment. First-time horse owner at 47. Rose is a 4 year old green-broke Welsh-Quarter mare. At first I was impatient (sound familiar?) and I fell off Rose the second time out and fractured a vertabrae. Yes I had fear and tension after that. But only temporarily. Being a 47 year old wise woman, I was able to identify that I was the problem, not the horse, and I needed to correct ME. Then I started taking dressage lessons. My instructor has told me that I'm a dream to work with, I'm relaxed in the saddle and completely tuned in to the horse....no matter if she puts me on an old school horse or a forward hot horse.
As of this writing I have had my pony for 4 months. I can ride her saddled at all gaits or bareback at the walk and trot, and do not need a bit with her. As my instructor says, I become centaur-like...one with the horse. And why? Because I am older, wiser and more patient that I was when I was younger. Look for us in the ring in a couple of years!
