» Joy Butler - Adoption Fees

Rescue is truly a labor of love. The truth is, that if an adopter isn't willing to pay rescue expenses for a pet, it is likely that he/she doesn't care enough about the animal to take on the responsibility and give it proper care.

Hi Joan, what a great article! Of course the adoption fees are not too high. You people that work so hard on behalf of these unfortunate animals deserve so much more. But I'm sure the satisfaction of rescuing and placing these animals is the greatest reward. God bless you all! Renie

I am always amazed when people think that Rescued animals should be free. It's almost as if they think there is a good fairy out there, paying all the vet bills. They haven't a clue about the Real Costs of owning a Pet. (see Real Costs: http://www.greatpyreneesrescue.net/shopwith.htm#realcosts)

This piece was based on my email response to a classified ad on Petfinders. The person was looking for a small dog, (not one of my giants), but I felt her warning that Rescue Groups need not respond, all in caps, and quite negative to Rescue--maligned the efforts of so many Rescuers.

In addition to saving lives, caring for and readying these animals for adoption, Rescuers also must try to educate folks concerning responsible Pet ownership.

Now that IS the payoff!! :-D We get to watch a Rescued animal gain in confidence and health. We get to see families made complete by the addition of a new family member!!

Did you get to read Nellie's Story?! (http://www.greatpyreneesrescue.net/nellie.htm) I am so happy for my old girl!

Joan,

May rescue groups link to this article from our sites and/or print it out as a resource? (Of course with you credited).

Absolutely, Shane!! You may link to the article.
I have quite a few links on Pyrangel's Website to Suite 101 articles! I am sure printouts for personal use are fine, but know that Suite 101 owns a 30 day exclusive right to articles published through them.

In response to Adoption Fees posted by JButler:

Some adoption fees are to high, when you go to a place that has adoption fees for $60 for a large dog and $250 for a small dog. I went today and found a dog that I just fell in love with, but because of the breed of the dog they wanted the $250 and another dog there that was a larger dog just $60. They have had the large dog for months and just got the small dog in. So how does the difference of fees come in. Small dog was already vaccinated and neutered before he came to the shelter but the large dog was not. Now for the saying if you can't afford the adoption fees then you won't be able to afford the vet bills. I had pom that I paid $200 for and over his live span I spent $5000 over different medical problems. Sometimes I didn't have the money to take him to the vet but he went anyway. He was not just a pet but a part of my family. So no I cannot afford the adoption fee now, but if someone in my family needed medical attention, they would get it and that means any animal that was in my home.
