Hello, I am soon to be a poodle owner (or am I her pet?) Anyway she is just 8 weeks old. I have never had a poodle before, and found your pages a great help. Thank You for taking the time out to help people like me.There is so much to learn, I and My daughters aged 14 & 18 can't wait to bring her home. She is a silver white. Thank You again from Karen

Great article, with many points I haven't seen discussed before. I love my standard poodle, but really don't like the AKC standard grooming for poodles (so I've been keeping her in a puppy trim). Could any of the terrier type cuts be applied to a poodle? In particular, Kerry Blue or Schnauzer? To my eye the underlying body structure of the three breeds seems similar - square bodies, long muzzles. I know it might be viewed as sacrilege by poodle fanatics, but I think it would look great. What do you think?

Glad you liked the article. I think if you want to trim your poodle like a terrier then it is your choice. As far as would it look good, well I think the dog show pure bred folk might disagree, but then they don't live at your house so who cares. Terri-poo poo clips are cute and most poodles that aren't purebreds can carry off the look successfully. The papered purebred poodle could have a tough time getting it to look like a terrier, but I have seen it come fairly close.

One nice thing is if you try and you don't like it you can cut it off and grow it out.

The terrier tail and short rear body and legs would similar simular looking from a distance, but the curls are a dead giveaway.

Good luck and let us know how it looks if you decide to give it a try.

Thanks for writing!

» gregtracey44 - Poodle Clips- which one

Hi

I have a 4 year old male miniature poodle who I got from a rescue
group about 6 weeks ago. When I got him groomed, I got his body
clipped medium-short with a top knot and long ears.

I would like to get something a bit shorter as I am finding the long
hair difficult - he plays with another dog and his ears get rather
soggy! Can anyone tell me the name of an appropriate clip that has
shorter ears and no top knot. Is there anywhere on the internet that
shows photo's of the available clips?

thanks
Tracey

The names of clips vary from one groomer to the next. i suggest telling your groomer exactly what you'd like. The mnore detail you can give her for what you are looking for the better. I know I prefer a customer who is up front and direct.

From your account I would say a #4F blade all over the body and leave a little fluffy tail and shortened ears and no topknot. If they leave the eye lashes this clip is adorable and practical.
Try a seach for dog grooming clips.

» TaniAliya - Maltese-Poodly X grooming

Hi,
I am new to doggy world and have a maltese-poodle x male now 14 months. I like his hair long, but it is v. difficult because the poodle curl almost gives him dreadlocks. Some hints on grooming would be gratefully received.

Soon, I may go to live in the tropics: is it best to cut his hair?

In response to message posted by TaniAliya:

I have many customers with the same trouble with their Maltese/Poodle X As to what is best long or short is entirely up to your preference and time. Grooming a long haired curly coat means good conditioners and constant brushing to separate the dread-lock look. In a humid climate you add an even more difficult factor into the problem. Moisture can cause matting.
My advise is try clipping him in a puppy clip and see how you like it. It will have less ringlet-type curls and be much easlier to keep. If you don't like it, it always grows back. smile

» xrayman7 - dread-locks!!

Our 10 month miniature (champagne colour) grooms up easily although still has puppy hair but -
Our 9 month old black miniature, also still has soft hair which just matts the more we brush him!!
why does this happen only to him & should we clip him right down to get rid of the dreadies and start again?
How do you prevent it happening, he is kept pretty short -looking like a teddy bear as both our kids - {the owners} don't like "booffy" poodle cuts???????

It's been my experience to see coats like you describe on your black stay extremely curly even after they mature. Brushing is only a temporary solution. Try avoiding heavy conditioners and keep him short as the long the hair grows the more noticeable the curls. good luck
