There's no way for anyone to know for sure what it might be without testing it so I suggest you take the puppy to the vet. But sometimes puppies have demodex which is due to a weak immune system and is usually easily treated when caught early.

» Tinkerbell06 - My 8 week Maltese cries at night

Hello there, I have a beautiful little Maltese. Tinkerbell is her name. I just got her today. I would like to know how long will she cry for? I understand that being away from mummy and her brothers & sisters is hard. She is the smallest of the litter. I have her in an area with paper. I leave her crate open so she can come and go. Tonight she actually left her crate and urinated on the paper and then went back to the crate. If she has started that will she remain that way? Is it ok to leave her crate open during the day & night? Where she stays the door is closed so there is nothing she can get into to harm herself. Please advise. I know this was long. Also, she hates her collar, should I keep it on regardless or wait till she is older to try her with the collar. She is crying, what should I do to help with her transition into our home? She has walked about the house and played. She seems relaxed around me. Also, should I be using a conditioner along with her Shampoo and if yes, which one? Also, is it safe to use a blow dryer to dry her coat? Are Maltese puppies afraid of the dark and if so do I need to put a night light in her area? can you tell I am a new comer to puppies/animals. Her eye area has a tinge of a color what product can I use to clear that up?
Thank you

Thank you for visiting Suite101 and congratulations on your new baby! Some babies cry longer than others. She is missing her mother and littermates and is feeling very lonely. You could try leaving soft music playing for her along with a stuffed animal for her to cuddle up with. If her room is very dark, a night light may be nice. It might help if you could put her bed near yours so that you could pet her from your bed or talk to her. A nice play period right before bedtime may tire her out enough to help her rest better too. But if she is fed, pottyed and warm, do not allow her to control you with her crying.

She has learned from her mother not to go to the bathroom in her bed and this will be your base for housetraining. If you want her paper trained, it would be ok to leave the crate open, but if you want to train her to go outside, you should leave the crate closed when you are not there to take her outside. At your puppy's age, she will need to go out about every 2 hours and after each nap and each meal (she should be eating several times a day). In another couple of months, she will be eating less often and can probably wait about 4 hours between trips outside. Be sure to praise her when she does something you want her to do.

If she hates her collar, I would wait a week or so before introducing it to her. She has enough to adjust to right now without adding anything extra. Please make sure she doesn't get out or lost because, without identification, her chances of being returned are low. When you do put it on her again, she may scratch at it for awhile but don't worry, she'll soon get over it. Her collar will need adjusting frequently as puppies grow so quickly.

Any shampoo or conditioner that you use on her should be formulated especially for puppies (not adult dogs), and if you use a blow dryer, I would make sure it is not on a hot setting. There are products available for removing tear stains around the eyes but I'm not sure they can be used on young puppies. This would be something to ask your vet about. And your puppy should see a vet as soon as possible. Puppies can be vulnerable to many diseases and you want to make sure she stays healthy.

I have tried to briefly answer your questions here but my free course addresses puppy care and training in more detail. Please see Training Puppies at http://www.suite101.com/course.cfm/18373...

I wish you and your new little companion many happy years of love and companionship.

I would suggest housetraining your puppy using the crate method which is taught within my course at this link. It requires diligence for awhile, but it works.

As far as sitting by the door, some dogs begin to signal when they need to go out and some just wait for you to take them. But with crate training you should be able to establish a routine that works for both of you. Keep us posted on your progress.

By the way, has he stopped his night crying and did you find out what the flaking skin problem was?

yes i done what u suggested i do with him at night and it worked brilliantly from the first night he slept all the way through no crying at all. see before we used to leave a light on for him but now its completely dark. as for the flakey skin and baldness we went to the vet and they said it could be some kind of mite or it could be where he is growing and the hair is not growing quik enough to cover the skin. they gave us some stuff to use and said if it doesnt continue to improve then take him back....but that has all cleared up now too. thankyou very much for asking

» sillymee - how do i keep my golden retriever puppy from crying?

Summer is 8 week old golden retriever. i barely got her yesterday and she immediately connected with me. but as soon as i leave her with someone else she begins to cry. also at night she doesnt sleep, she scratches the door and cries until i go outside with her. and it seems that the only time she sleeps would be in the afternoon. how can i get her to sleep during the night and not to cry as much?

hi,
i have recently bought a westie puppy called poppy. we had a problem with her crying at night but she seems to be ok now =] she never seems to want to play with me or sit and have a cuddle. she won't even lay on the sofa or my bed. she sleeps on the kitchen floor during the day and in her crate during the night. The weather is hot at the moment, do you think that is why she doesnt want to be too close to people?? she is only 10 weeks, do you think she'll change as she gets older??

thank you
